Watched the Japanese originals of the Ring and the Grudge. I’ve always held the western remakes in reasonably high regard (well, particularly the Grudge as that is one of my favourite horrors - that film really gave me the willies!!!) so about time I checked them out.
First, the Grudge. Seems that the American remake was about 2/3 of the Japanese version... but by far aware the best 2/3rds. The Japanese one feels more like an anthology with a few bonus stories. The Japanese one also has a really odd ending and actually suggests quite a different series of events than the version I’m used to!
My take was either it was actually the father that was the malevolent ghost and the others were just echoing the pain they went through.... or that there was no real driving personality of evil - it was just an overbearing sadness that cursed the house.
Ultimately I think the American version was more satisfying but it was really cool to see the extra story and extra characters. Fleshed it out a little!
As for the Ring. Well, tbh I wasn’t really that fussed on the Japanese version - WAY overhyped. Started off well but the noticeable difference was that there were a lot more ‘fantastic’ elements in the Japanese version:
Volcanos... hinting that the father wasn’t human... the male lead having special powers that last one I found really confusing.
Sure, the Hollywood version is a lot more ‘slick’ and people clearly don’t like that but the Japanese version didn’t add anything other than a few ‘ookie’ elements, as said in the spoiler.
I’d say check out the Japanese Grudge but skip the Japanese Ring.
On a plus, the Ring did have an epic out of place dance tune during the credits. Had a little bop to that
Original was good and the Sarah Michelle Geller remake was pretty decent too, can't really understand why they would want to make another.
But as a true horror fan I will make a point in seeing this.
