The hell of HMRC web site

The wife has to do a self assessment this year - in past she has paid someone to do it -- Last year she paid tax on a savings account although she earns below the Personal allowance.

We signed her up to Gov Gateway and letter came with a one off sign in number which went fine.

This afternoon we both swore at HMRC web site - swore at screen - swore at each other and in end she flounced off.

After sitting there for an hour I found a little paragraph saying if you have a UTR number you can't do self assessment.

Well golly gosh or words to that effect issued forth from my mouth and I also flounce off cursing tax man and hoping he dies a painful death.

My question is to anyone who knows the answer "why can't she do her tax if she has a UTR number" -- If by any chance she can, could someone please point me to the right page - I am sure this is going to be easy but at moment it most certainly isn't.

Seems like she will have to pay again to get her money back from taxman that shouldn't have been taken anyway - Yes she did fill a form in saying she didn't pay tax - was a mix up by the building Society.

I have a UTR and I just completed my on-line self-assessment for the year.

In fact, previously, when you register for self-assessment, you GET a UTR number.

Where on the site (or wherever you got the information from) does it say you can't do self-assessment with a UTR?

Thats why i posted those links above. You need a UTR for self-assessment!

i think you mean that you do need a UTR number.

any person who is self employed should have one, also the website is very easy to use if you have the correct info.

He must do. Once u have that it's actually quite easy to do your self assessment online. It should be on her notice to complete a tax return or you got it when you registered which you have already done?

Been on both those pages along with loads of others.

Wife is registered with Government Gateway and also "Has a UTR" - we just can't find the page where she can fill in the forms- - we keep going round in circles and coming back to introduction page . each time we try to log in it throws up register page and we have done that twice.

She has paid someone £50 to do her tax forms but as said, last year she earned less than personal allowance so thought she would do it herself as Taxman owes her money - not a lot but it seemed pointless to pay someone for a simple form filling job.

Each time I come back on PC I spend 10 min trying again with same results - chasing my own tail. - Trouble with being old things are never easy or don't seem to be.

We will plod on for another few days poking and hoping.

Thanks for suggestions and links

Try this...... This is the page you need if you already have a utr number.

Edit: scratch that..... It seems you have already registered?

You were right - it does say just after you log in that if you have a UTR you can't do self assessment but got to link to sign on for self employed.
Will do that tomorrow now

Bit confusing as I was expecting it to be straight forward - silly me.

I'm not sure why your wife had to register for self assessment in the first place, I'd have thought form R40 would have done the job.

Anyway it would appear she is registered for self assessment now so it is a moot point.

Assuming that the Self Assessment (SA) service within the government gateway has been setup correctly, which if you got the one time activation code it sounds like you have, then you just submit the tax return through the SA service. The login link has already been given above:

The wife was a self employed Carer for a number of years and paid someone to do her tax - She retired 8 years ago and up till last year when 3 year bond matured she no longer earns enough to pay tax and she sure isn't going to work again.

We are hoping the tax man will let her go after this year as it's a waste of their time and wifes.

We assumed that as she had a UTR number we could just go in once logged but it seems she still has to register for self employed - That brought up page linked to earlier.

Thanks everyone I think we are there now.
