The Hive sat down?

Sitting down games will be fine, standing games you need to be able to pivot on the spot ideally even when games use teleport system you maybe facing the wrong way. You maybe better getting a rift for seated only gaming.

If you like elite dangerous, then yes it's worth it! Having a rift, I only really bother with seated games, and so far they have all impressed!

I'd assume that if you're capable for standing (even for a short period of time) you'd be fine using a swivel chair.

If that's the case then you'd have no limitations with that you can do with the HTC Vive as instead of "room scale" it is possible to set the system us as "standing room only".

Don't be put off by the terminology however, as any standing game can be played seated.

Additionally, regardless of the size of your room, most games are going to have some kind of movement mechanic as even if you had a room that was 10m x 10m that wouldn't be big enough for some games - so there's almost always a mechanic that lets you move around in the virtual world - like teleportation...

Both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive are fantastic bits of kit and recommending one over the other is becoming harder as we come closer to the launch of the Oculus Touch (which adds hand controllers to the Oculus Rift) but if you're looking to buy today I'd definitely try and get a shot of one or the other first before putting down your money.

I've often wondered this too! There are some games that i'd want to use with VR, like Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, Euro Truck Simulator, and a slew of other driving games. On that basis would you recommend the Oculus over the Vive?

I made my decision based on similar criteria, and chose the rift for two reasons: a) lower initial costs (I can buy touch controllers and extra sensor later if I decide I want to) and b) supposedly marginally better optics and extended use comfort of the rift.

I haven't used the Vive so I can't honestly know if I made the right choice, but I'm certainly very happy with the rift. The only real limitations are imposed on both (resolution and fov) so I think both are good choices. I did prefer the look of the oculus touch controllers though. The Vive ones just look too big for my liking.

I have both. If I want to just sit down and play Elite, DCS, Project Cars or any other sim I'll use the Rift.

While the resolutions of the screen are both the same the pixel fill is better so gives a better image. Currently the Rift copes better with frame rates that drop below 90fps because its frame reprojection (asynchronous time warp) appears to much better than the Vives implementation as it stands right now.

Saying that, many others that have both claim they prefer the Vive over the Rift because of the slightly wider field of view - but this is something you'll only ever notice putting them on/off back to back as both aren't perfect in this regard by any means.

The Rift headset build quality is far superior as well as the ease at which you can take it on/off is a blessing - built in headphones work a treat as well.

Had the vive 4 days now, really like it (using it in standing mode until i move one of the lighthouses to allow for a larger area for roomscale). BUT my sennheisers kept falling off when playing some games. You won't get that with the rift. Plus the headset is much lighter.
I think when touch comes out, if you want better roomscale for rift, just buy another sensor.
That said, i read a few articles that suggested there is more game development for the vive than rift.

The Oculus Touch will come with a second camera. "Room Scale" is still slightly more problematic as you'll need a USB extender to get it to the other side of the room as the "suggested" setup from Oculus is to place both cameras on your desk - one to the left, the other to the right to stop occlusion from one tracker being an issue.

Additionally regardless of "more games being developed for the Vive" steam VR supports many VR headsets and input devices.

The Oculus Rift and Touch controllers are natively supported by the Steam SDK. So even if someone develops a game specifically "for the Vive" if you plug in your Rift and Oculus Touch it will work. Just the controls might be a little funky when it comes to how they're mapped by default.
