The HP W2408..

Badass any chance you can try to confirm exactly what were getting panel wise and if our advertised specification is correct? We supposedly have a UK/Europe exclusive on this panel and it does indeed look superb. When they arrive tomorrow I shall have a closer look at one to try and discover what panel/tech it uses. :)

hi mate

the way the spec is listed on their official site is clever / deceiving. They have it listed as "4ms / 2ms G2G" and i think they've gone with the old fashioned cunning way of making it sound better than it is. I think what the've done is list the rise time and fall time separately, so 4ms + 2ms = 6ms.The rest of the spec certainly suggests it's a S-PVA panel (in fact they mention S-PVA in their spec too):

1000:1 contrast ratio (3000:1 with dynamic control)
500 cd/m2 brightness
178/178 viewing angles

what they did with their display at IFA 2007 as well is just list the 2ms response time element which is only one part of the overall response time. A couple of years ago manuf used to do this all the time, looks like they are doing the same:

hyundai_w240d_3dspec.jpg

note that this was the spec sheet for their 3D version, but same underlying panel i should imagine

The only thing that confuses me is they also list a 160/160 viewing angle in their spec sheet and further down list Response Time as "4ms / 2ms (GtG), S-PVA 6ms(GtoG)"......this makes me wonder if there's two versions, an S-PVA and a TN Film (but then this would be very odd with the same model number. I'm pretty certain it's a Samsung S-PVA panel, with proper full response time of 6ms G2G. I'll clarify if i can with someone i know at Hyundai :)

ps, Gibbo, you should be able to tell easily enough when you get the stock by viewing the screen from below. If it goes obvious very dark / black from a view from below, it's TN Film. If contrast stays pretty consistent then it's prob S-PVA :)

Hi there

What do you mean m8? Please clarify.

I will get one out tomorrow and also note down any serial numbers and any specific numbering etc. that may lead to what the panel is. :)

It certainly looks an awsome piece of kit with a wide range of connections, I do also believe OcUK has at least a UK exclusive on this panel if not Europe and by that I mean we have it listed on our site and have stock arriving tomorrow confirmed. :)

sorry mate. What i meant is that the easiest way to tell whether a screen is TN Film is to observe the viewing angles from a view below the screen. If it's TN Film it will show a characteristic obvious darkening / contrast shift, and if you move low enough, will go completely black.

For instance:

TN Film from head on:

TN Film as viewed from below (Samsung 931C this is):
DSCN1350.JPG

another one just to show it's inherant (Acer AL2216W):
DSCN1329.JPG

so if you see this obvious darkening then the panel it very likely to be TN Film.

if on the other hand it looks more even, and there isnt this obvious darkening contrast shift then it is likely to be another panel tech, in which case it must be the S-PVA panel that i think this model uses:

For instance, PVA panel from below (Samsung 971P):

Still a shift, but doesnt go totally dark like on TN Film.

Gibbo, received a response from Hyundai Tech support stating "Please find the datasheet for W240D attached. The model with these specifications will be available in the European market soon."

so there is a specific model and spec for the European market which was sent to me as a PDF. Spec is

2ms response time (it doesnt specify, but must be G2)
400 cd/m2 brightness
3000:1 contrast ratio (again, not specified but must be Dynamic)
170 / 160 viewing angles

from that spec it looks like it is TN Film based and possibly a panel from Samsung (LTM240CT maybe, with some additional overdrive and extra dynamic contrast). I'm seeking clarification as to who manuf the panel and double checking it is TN Film....will come back to you when i hear more :)

edit: confirmed it's a Samsung panel. just waiting on clarification for sure whether it's TN Film or S-PVA. also checking if there's a diff model internationally outside of Europe :)

Can a mod change the name of this thread. It's been so badly derailed that it might aswell be called The Hyundai W240D 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black.

Hi there

OK had words with Hyundai and for the moment the W240D is shipping with a Samsung TN panel. As such the price has now been changed and lowered by £50 to represent the fact its a TN panel.

Hyundai claim a PVA version is on the cards and will be a different model, however PVA panel type cost $100 more than TN panel so expect that to be around the £450 area which in fairness is good value as the specification could indeed be better than DELL's 2407-HC model.

i've been trying to decide between the Dell 2407WFP-HC , the Samsung 247T and the Hyundai W240D ...

samsung's model has all the inputs i need but i hear that the colour reproduction is extremely poor, even after professional calibration.
the Dell is excellent all round, but it doesn't have a HDMI port (why!!!??)
and the Hyundai has been confirmed as a TN Panel, so that's gone out the window ;p

looks like i'll be going for the Dell and i'll have to buy a DVI switch + HMDI to DVI cables ;/ (to hook up PS3 + 360)

Always difficult choices, the Dell HC which is still up in air... the sammy which just vanished and never came out... the HP PVA panel which still isnt out.

Lots of fun....

Gibbo, if the current model is still bearing the TN panel, any chance of the obviously incorrect 178/178 viewing angles stated in the info being changed to that of a TN screen, as those who want a 24" and dont check the forums every time they buy might mistakenly assum its a better quality panel. Especialy given the TWO offer on it!

People might be a little miffed if they buy mistakenly!
