Out on the fens again last night, saw no end of stuff knocking around, as usual bumped into my friend.. finally managed to get close enough to rattle a few in flight frames off, didn't see him again after that!

Hey vspec,

I've seen you post these sort of pics regularly now and I have a few questions.

How close are you to that owl in terms of distance 20metres?

I presume thats still with the 300mm f2.8 lens yeah on a full frame body?

Are those shots cropped from the original to make the owl look bigger or is that full size? If the former, could you post a photo without the crop as it would be uesful to see how much of the frame is filled by the owl.

Normally I can get quite close to them as they're getting used to me now (I go out there a lot) I can get within 3 meters if they're feeling accomodating.
Those shots were taken from about 10-15 meters away which makes 300mm about perfect for a bird of his size, (wingspan of about 3.5ft). The camera I use isn't a full frame sensor its 1.3 crop factor so that equates to just short of 400mm.
They are cropped slightly just for framing, i'll post an uncropped example later when I get in if you like

theres a 70-200mm canon f4L on sale in the MM which I was thinking of picking up. thats about 112-320mm on a 1.6x 400D.

Do you think thats is any good a general zoom lens (I'm on budget)? I know its very sharp. I doubt I'm going to be taking many outdoor wildlife shots of birds,etc.

70-200 F4 is the sharpest zoom canon make, you can't go wrong with it, its a bit too short for wild wildlife but still a cracking lens.
