The ideal Mobo.

I am considering an Asus Commando Intel 965 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard for an upgrade
Which will incorporate the following:-

GeIL 2GB PC6400 ram
Intel Core Duo E6600 cpu
BFG GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB
Seagate Barracuda 250 hard drive x2.

I would probably be looking at o’clocking the system at a later date, but not immediately.
The system would be used for gaming, with some video and image manipulation thrown in.
Am I going OTT regarding the Mobo, or is it an ideal board.
If it is OTT, what board would be ideal?

Would appreciate any help given, because the Mobo is the one item I am really not sure of.

I just read a review today on this board on my lunch break in the Custom PC magazine latest issue, and it got 86% and apparently it is an overclocking machine. Very good quality and stable also, wish I had got one tbh! Looks amazing.

I couldnt be happier with my Commando. Clocks like a demon and is rock solid. In my opinion the layout of the board is exceptional with everything exactly where it should be. Those 90degree SATA ports are a godsend for cable management too. In my humble opinion, go for it mate, you wont be sorry :)

It's overpriced though at £130 ish plus

Also looks nice

Buy it.

The OC'ing features are great - especially when recovering from a bad overclock - turn it off, turn it back on and push a button! Hey presto, get back in the Bios and try again!

Highly recommended.

I've seen a lot of user complaints (buzzing inductors, killing RAM etc.) around the forums about the Commando too though so I would do some more research.

At that level imo it's also worth looking at the AB9 QuadGT - no, it's not yet perfect either but the complaints centre around the BIOS rather than hardware & imo are relatively minor niggles.

You can also consider 650i based mobos though & indeed with an E6600 975X mobos.

Havent heard about killing ram but the buzzing seems to have been the first boards that were available and its easily fixed by tightning the coils. I have had 2 Commando boards and neither buzzed.

Hi, I've got three questions about this motherboard, answer please on a postcard:
1) Will it take a Scythe Ninja ok and fit in my case....
2) Does it have any heat issues with the north/soutbridges, my current motherboard is severely overheating when playing games....
3) How does it compare with my P5WDH-Deluxe...

Thanks to all for any answers in advance :)

1) Will it take a Scythe Ninja ok and fit in my case.... - Fits my Tuniq just fine but I have a Mirage62 so cant comment on the case. It has plenty clearance for large heatsinks.
2) Does it have any heat issues with the north/soutbridges, my current motherboard is severely overheating when playing games.... - Currently running 425mhz FSB and NB temps report 50C under load, dont have a problem with crashing or anything during 12hour orthos tests or playing games.
3) How does it compare with my P5WDH-Deluxe... - someone else who has had this mobo would be better off replying.

Hi ubern00b and thanks for your prompt reply. Re the Scythe, I think it is the mounting that might prove to be problematic as there is a row of capacitors quite close to the CPU. My motherboard temps are currently sitting at 48c, idle, so there is something wrong with this mb somewhere. Lets hope someone can fill in the blanks...
Cheers

Thing is with the Commando is that it has probably one of the best mobo layout I've seen, just look around the CPU socket of the pic above and notice it has no caps around it like the MSI. Makes fitting custom cooling the the CPU much easier.

Thanks to all you guys for your time and the info.
I think I shall go for the Commando, as the general consensus of opinion is that it is a pretty good Mobo.
I have to make a decision sometime, otherwise I shall be using the rig I've got now forever!!
Thanks again, much appreciated.

I'm waiting for the thing to drop a bit in £ did you know it even has a Mini lcd screen! yes compared to 70c + on "recommended boards around these here parts" I love the quad gt and the commando.

Aye the LCD is useless in my humble opinion but it wasnt exactly a selling point for me :D Its not a cheap board but again, in my humble opinion, its worth every penny I paid for it.

Hi, I thought it was the P5B Premium Vista Edition that has that, I can't see the LCD screen mentioned in any of the reviews of the Asus Commando...

it has a small LCD screen on the backplane for POST debugging - of course with it there you can't really see it most of the time ...

Hi, yeah I was thinking the other version that uses screenduo. What use is a lcd display on the back of your PC anyway?
