The impact of AMPs

I'm thinking of building my first half decent gaming set up but am a bit clueless when it comes to audio. What is the impact of a headphone amp, how do comersial amps compare to those home project ones and does an X-Fi act as a pre-amp?

I have an X-Fi Fata1ty card and found there was little to no difference in my music when I plugged a headphone amp in.

What headphones do you have Chris? Unless they're fairly high impedence I wouldn't think you would need a headphone amp.
