We took some of our benchmark values for power and frequency, extrapolated them with a power curve, and we estimate that at 5.0 GHz, this chip is likely to be drawing in excess of 900W, perhaps as high as 1200W. Yes, Intel really did need that 1700W water chiller.

TBF someone who buys this CPU probably wouldn't be overclocking but if they wanted to I'm sure they would have the funds to cool it too .
Is there any realistic solution that actually could cool one of these on an ongoing basis though? It's all very well putting it under LN2 or a 1700W water chiller for a benchmarking session, but those don't seem like practical solutions for 24/7 use. Of course, you don't have to overclock it, but that rather nullifies the big selling point of it being unlocked. It seems like a product designed to serve a marketing stunt, rather than a marketing stunt designed to serve a product.

It will be fine with a decent custom loop, its not like you are going to put it in an matx system, so in a l=nice big case with decent rad support a pair of 360mm rads will be ok to cool it at 1.12-1.17v.
 
I’m surprised you can pull nigh on a kilowatt through a CPU socket without killing the board.

This is a really silly CPU, it’s all about not letting AMD get too far ahead in the core wars, but alas 14nm really isn’t a good enough process for this.

i dont see the power draw being an issue for such a large board at all. there are gpu's like 780ti and 980ti that can pull similar power and they are just on a gpu pcb :P

Yes he did say that. I guess we will see when they come out, but it aint going to be cheap thats for sure XD
 
I've watched a few about the CPU but I can't honestly say I've retained all the info I've been given. I recognise the price but don't recall the reference to damage in that video.

In my defence it has been a loooooooooong week.
