The Internet Replacement - The Grid

Basically it's written by some journalist who has no idea what he's talking about. Parallel global networks have always existed (commercial ones exist like Akamai), this one is just a fast dedicated academic one.

The idea that the core internet is still based on telephone circuits and is unfit for high speed data is just false, the idea that there should only be one kind of routing equipment completely goes against the idea of the internet as an open multi-provider network.

It's just rubbish. Internet 2 is a much more realistic view of what the internet might look like in the future but it won't be replaced, logistically it's just not possible, it'll be upgraded in sections by the providers.

Agree with the above tbh..

Academic societies have always had their own ultra fast networks to themselves, but the kind of kit it runs over is no different to the kit we use in the VM core, or any other ISP, its all ultra fast switching kit, all of it is capable of switching hundreds and hundreds of gigs per second...

most of it is total rubbish, especially this:

This is because the internet has evolved by linking together a hotchpotch of cables and routing equipment, much of which was originally designed for telephone calls and therefore lacks the capacity for high-speed data transmission.

Juniper T/M series, Cisco CSR/GSR, etc etc, were all of course designed for connecting normal telephones too...

Of course there are parts of the internet which are slow due to the amount of people using it, but if you instantly migrated the current traffic of the internet to "THE GRID" it wouldn't be any better lol..

It sounds like The Grid isn't really about distributing data, but distributed computing.
