*** The iPad Air thread ***

I suspect you may be right. Not good enough really on a premium product.
There was speculation that the move to 64 bit would cause problems with the low RAM.
What seems odd to me is that I have this problem irrespective of how many other apps are open. You would have thought the RAMcould be managed better.

I bet the next air has 2gb ram though.

In the Anandtech review for the Air it said 64bit apps take up too 30% more ram, so I'm hoping they bump it up to 2gb with next years revision. The amount of Apps that use 64bit will only increase and this will just reduce the amount of memory the device will have left.

In general you’re looking at a 20 - 30% increase in memory footprint when dealing with an all 64-bit environment.

I remember that review and I'm sure they're right and this is contributing to the problems.

What still strikes me as odd is I have the same Safari issues if I have one app open or ten. It doesn't change, which either means Safari is using a lot of RAM for 2 or 3 webpages or something else is wrong.

Anyway time for a change for me and I've just ordered the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 model. Will see how it compares to the Air. I like the idea of a stylus and 3gb RAM. Unfortunately not in stock at the moment though

My missus still has my old iPad 3 so still have access to all my old apps.

Due to my not so good eyesight I'm thinking of selling my 64Gb mini retina and buying a Air. As anyone else done this and any regrets? I love the size and weight of the mini after coming from iPad's 3 and 4.

Or should I wait for the next iPad refresh?

I've had all iPads with the exception of the 4th.
The Air is the best and the worst of them at the same time.

It's the most unreliable iPad I've had. That is my biggest gripe.
Nitpicking, the screen has a 'sponginess' the others don't have. It doesn't affect the use but the screen doesn't have the solid slab feel of the other iPads.

For balance it's also the best in terms of speed and form factor. It's very light and nice to hold (with a case).
I love the form factor and find it difficult to go back to the iPad 3 now.
As above iOS 7.1 has improved things on the Air, but there are definitely still problems with it in Safari.

My advice would be to wait for the next refresh. I'll bet it will have 2gb RAM, Touch ID and a better camera as a minimum. They may even increase the screen res to keep up with Android, but for me the screen is fine as is.

There are also good alternatives out there and will be interesting to see what the new Nexus 10 offers when Google finally release.

It might not, the might eventually get around to replacing the ipad2 which is still their second line in the bigger ipad model, and replace it with the air, replacing the air in turn with the 'pro' and its extra ram.
We shall see.

They replaced the Ipad 2 with the ipad 4 recently.

Thanks, might take your advise and wait for the refresh, definitely want to stick with iPad as I find the AppStore and general quality of Apps better than Android plus I already have a SG3 and looking to upgrade to a Note 3 or 4 so like to keep my toes in both!

I've heard allot about the Air's screen being spongy and this is a concern so maybe they'll fix this in the next revision.

My wife has just bought an Air, precisely because it was recommended to her for her deteriorating eyesight by the optician. So far, she's delighted with it.

The issue with Safari on the Air is that is has memory leaks, I believe this is fixed in iOS 7.1, have you updated yet?

More ram won't fix this it is a bug in the app, it is not present in the 32bit version so you would have noticed a difference if you compared a A7 device with a A6 for example.

Air is also very light and the size is pretty awesome, if you have a apple store near you you should try it out.

Yep upgraded to 7.1 the day it came out. It has improved the crashes but the tab refreshing issue is exactly as it was.

I'm aware the Air is 64 bit and understood it effectively has a bigger RAM footprint, but your memory leak info is interesting. Got any more info on that?

I know this is the Air thread but I've got exactly the same issue on my Mini Retina, its bloody annoying, especially when you've got nothing but Safari running and only a couple of tabs open.

I believe the issue was fixed with 7.1 but basically the code had a bug which would leak memory, this would quickly get out of control and fill up the ram and everything gets purged. It does seem to be effect some people very heavily and others not at all. For example I have 4 A7 tablets at work 2 have issues with safari and others have no issues at all. Given I work as a web developer I spend 95% of my time testing on safari.

Do the 2 still have issues after installing 7.1?

It is annoying. I thought we'd seen the last of these problems with the original iPad but sadly not.

I'm actually using Chrome at the moment and that seems slightly more stable. Still has the problem but I'm finding I can have more tabs open.
I literally only have Chrome with two tabs and mail open.

When would you say is the cutoff point in buying an Air or waiting for the Air 2?

I'm going to be upgrading my iPad 2 at some point this year and although the Air is still relatively new, do I hold off and see what happens later in the year....

i bought an air last week

£300 UK Model, sealed in box.....love it!!

the bay, filter uk only, buy it now, price low to high. They start at £319.99, but keep refreshing as every so often the ones at £300 pop up.
