*** The iPhone 3G Thread ***

Therein lies the problem, Apple seem to be arrogant enough to think that they can change the way everyone has done sending pictures & media to eachother.

I think Apple just need to learn that unlike the mp3 player market, they are not the big boys of the mobile market which they seem to think.

I don't think email is a competent alternative to SMS or MMS at the minute, but I think given what we have to work with it isn't as bad as people make it out to be.

I do still think also there will come a time when the balance will begin to shift, all the major mobile providers wanting a bit of the Broadband market so it would make sense for them to start integrating the free email accounts you get with that on to your mobile. I do acknowledge it won't be any time soon though. :)

I'm definitely a geek that would prefer email to MMS... although I never send photos, so I'm entirely indifferent! I've never had MMS bundled on my contract, so consequently I've never thought of using it as it's an unecessary expense.

And a geek that is most excited about ActiveSync coming to the iPhone. Will be fantastic to have my email, contacts and calendar permanently in sync between the phone and the server (and consequently Outlook web access and Outlook on my laptop). Not used email much when I've had to have it as IMAP. ActiveSync and 3G will put email on the move in a different league for me.

Wonder how many people will be selling the iphones when Nokia launch the new N96 ive already got one on pre-order sim free for £599

Now i love my iphone don't get me wrong even with it limitations, now if apple wanted they could have put a decent camera, video recording, proper bluetooth, copy & paste, MMS ect ect..... But why should they when they know silly people will keep buying them if they just add a couple of features that most mobiles had had for at least the past 2 years.

1 Year form now

Apple V3 is announced

So what has changed?

Well we've added proper Bluetooth & copy and paste & wooping 3mp camera that still doesn't have a flash or autofocus & we made the battery abit better than the V2 & changed the back again and made it a few millimeters bigger than the V2

People go WOW and pee themselves with excitment over the iphone V3 new fandangle features. :/

I notice that the new 3G iPhone is free on some tariffs. Does this mean I can go into an O2 store, take it home for free whilst pretending I will sign up to the £43 tariff and then unlock it for my existing O2 contract.

Or will they start doing sign ups in store?

I wouldn't say it is so much a geek thing more an issue of standards.

If I send a txt or picture message to someones mobile number I know it will come up on their phone as I wrote it, I even get a delivery report telling me when it has arrived on their phone (usually instantly).

Whilst a lot of what I end up putting in txts or picture messages is just irreverent nonsense I don't want to have to gamble about whether the recipient even gets email on their phone, much less whether they will see my message in a timely fashion (or ever). Email is not a good enough alternative for this.

Personally I can just about take or leave picture messaging, it's not a deal breaker for me. I can imagine it being as important as txting for a lot of people though, and since you can send videos, music, dictation, etc as well as just pictures I can see how it would be an important feature for some, particularly as it is a standard that all mobiles support.

Indeed. Similarly I bet when they introduced the original iPhone to Europe they just figured enterprise & business people wouldn't care about 3G, Exchange integration, etc and would just buy the iPhone on badge alone. The new model reflects the fact they've had to eat a little bit of humble pie. Only a little mind.

It will be sign up in store, like every other contract phone.

As mentioned in several posts and threads already, it's going to be signup in store, the same as any other phone would be. If they do return to the iTunes activation it will more than likely be with a full price phone with a credit applied after activation.

forced to start up contract in store is the rumor

Rumor ? More like 100% certain.

What is the alterntive? hire a baliff to walk you home to make sure sure you sign up in itunes when you get home? Or start suing people who took one home for free but didn't sign up?

The only possibility is that sign up in store.

I dont know how they'll do it... but I would guess, and this is just by my reasoning, that they'll sign you up in store... how this affects iTunes and syncing is another matter.

EDIT// it appears this has already been debated!

Personally, MMS doesnt appeal to me and never has.. you get charged an extortionate rate, usually 4 messages to send the bamming things, when the majority of people that I would wish to share a funny pic with etc - would prefer to be emailed..

It's each to their own - but as someone mentioned before, I can see the possibility of an MMS app being one of the first in the App Store...

Personally, as I pay £35 a month anyway, and have done for the last few years, paying the same monthly charge and the advent only having to pay a small premium for the handset suits me.. Unless I decide to get the 16gb for free and switch to the £45 - although this means an extra £180 for the duration of the contract... will just have to wait and see I spose!

I'm the same. I just hope that they will let me break my contract early so I can upgrade, like they did with Version 1 iPhone.

Looking back, I should have broke my contract, got the 16Gb V1.0, sold it on e-bay and then I would be able to get the V2.0 iPhone without having to sign upto a second contract.

From what I gather (i'll get the link in a minute!) it should be fine.. basically you cancel your current contract and then start a new 18 month one...

I think! :)

If that's true, then :D:D:D

Edit - But I can't see anything about upgrading on there.....?

Doesnt it mention something about existing iPhone customers? A bit further down the bottom...

Click the o2 link (somewhere in that post!) and I think it explains it a bit further!

If I'm being dense, I apologise - but I just read it a different way!

Existing iPhone customers on the £45 per month contract will be able to upgrade their existing model to the new 8GB iPhone for free on July 11 by visiting the O2 Website. As we reported, you will need to sign up for a new 18 month contract. Existing customers on the £75 per month contract will receive the 16GB iPhone for free.

Current iPhone users on the £35 per month contract will be required to pay £99 to upgrade to the new handset and sign up for a new 18 month contract. They can, however, move up to the more expensive £45 per month contract and get the iPhone for free.

O2 has confirmed that existing iPhone customers will be able to keep their old iPhone. This can be handed on to another person who can sign up for a contract with O2.

All tariffs include unlimited browsing on your iPhone, unlimited Wi-Fi access to The Cloud and BT Openzone, visual voicemail and reduced roaming rates with the International Traveller Service (£3 per 1MB in EU countries, £6 per MB outside of the EU) and are subject to a minimum term contract of 18 months.

O2 has also announced a Pay & Go deal, although the company has not revealed yet any information as to how much the iPhone handset will cost. Customers interested in this deal are being asked to register their interest on the O2 website. More information is promised in July.

This is assuming you havent been a scamp and unlocked your iPhone! ;)

I think I read somewhere in the 2-3 huge threads on the new iPhone that although last time they let you end a normal O2 contract to get an iPhone, they're not going to be doing that this time.

I wouldn't take that as gospel, because I don't know who said it or what their source was, or if I even read it correctly.

Its what I did.. They'll pick a cut-off date (iirc it was October 2007 last time) and if you upgraded / took out a new contract before that date then you were able to prematurely end your existing contract and 'upgrade' to an iPhone with an iPhone contract..

As above.. dont take as gospel - but that's what happened last time!

Yeah, that's what I want to do. I've still got 4 months left on my 18 month contract. I want an iPhone tho.
