Germany was a democracy - Hitler was voted into power but then progressively stripped the democracy from it over the mid 1930s IMO you put too much faith in democracies.

That's not really true. Hitler was named Chancellor by Hindenburg despite never commanding a majority. No party could command a majority, and Germany was a bit like Greece is today. They were having elections every couple of years. So to break the deadlock, Hindenburg gave Hitler the job of Chancellor in a power sharing arrangement. 3 Nazis in a cabinet of 11. Hitler didn't like sharing power much, the rest is history.

Lots of people in Germany hated Hitler (I dare say a majority), and most knew he was a very dangerous man. Democracy in German 1930, wasn't like democracy 2015.

Fair enough - was trying to keep it simple but was under the impression he'd been elected.

EDIT: Kind of interesting that even after he'd basically rigged the elections he still didn't get enough votes to directly put him in power.
