The last of 939?

Over a year ago I "finished off" the setup for my PC. It's got an Opteron 146 running at 3GHz on an Abit AN8 Fatal1ty, with 2GB of Mushkin Redline.

It was always my intention to go dual core, but change nothing else bar the graphics card.

I happened to be having a look at things recently, and it looks to me that 939 is coming to and end.

As far as I can see, the best chip available for 939 now is the Opteron 185 or FX60. The performance of them, overclocked, appears to be on par with the highest end AM2 chips.

This would be an upgrade from a single core running at 3GHz to a dual core (hopefully) running at 3GHz.

I don't think it's particularly important that I get the FX, since I can use a divider, in addition the RAM I have will nicely go to 230, with nice timings, which with the Opterons 13x multiplier will come out at 3GHz, so I don't think I'd need the ability to change the multiplier.

The problem though, is that I don't need the extra speed yet. Sure it'd be nice, but the biggest hold up I have at the moment is chewing through large amounts of hard disk data - and the CPU is not going to affect that. Still, it would be nice to run 4 Eve clients lag free.

So I'll need to buy a 939 at _some_ point. I'm just wondering if now is the best time. AMD have just cut prices, there's no Opterons in stock in the UK, but there will be in a week or two.

Does anyone know if AMD have any more CPUs planned for 939, and when they intend to stop production of 939 chips?

Im pretty sure there aren't any new 939 chips being made. They are still probably being produced, just no new ones coming out. AM2 are still getting new ones i think.

production of 939 chips has already been stopped I thought?

185's and FX chips are expensive in comparison to 165 and 170s....and don't necessarily clock any better.

There are also some good 4400x2's...my last one did 3.03ghz....it was a CCBIE stepping

I've been looking about for a few days, and I can't find any word if AMD are planning to just discontinue production of 939. If that happens, then the 185s will be shooting up in price.

I don't suppose anyone remembers reading anything about it?

And the other question I had. Bar the unlocked multiplier, is there any difference between a 185 and an FX60?

Well, the FX-60 is ridiculously priced...and the 185 is still quite high as well.

Like i said before....a 165, 170, or a 4400x2 is much more reasonable.

they are the same except for the FX-60's unlocked multi...

Roger.

185s go for about £210, FX60s go for about £400.

It'd be nice to run an FX60 at 12x250. But not worth an extra £200. I'll have a sniff at the members market and see what the prices are.

I certainly wouldn't spend £200 on a 185. You'd have enough money to build an entire new Core 2 Duo system, if you sold your old gear on top of the £200!

Mmm, the RAM would have to go. And who's going to pay a fortune for that? I'd also have to take the PC to bits, remove the watercooling, and buy new chipset blocks, and a new CPU block, and buy new piping, drain it down, buy coolant, fill it back up. The whole thing would take hours, be a hassle, and cost me a fair bit. Which is why I'm keen to stick with 939 :)
