I got gifted the game via steam in the sales couple of weeks back. Just wondering if its anygood, ive read its a J-RPG and i couldnt get enough of the Final Fantasy series, any ideas what Last Remnant is like?

Its a great game but it's also incredibly hard, make sure you make seperate saves rather than relying upon auto save as I got to a section where which I couldn't progress past and didn't want to do it all again so uninstalled it.

It's a flawed but still pretty good game especially if you like J-RPGs.

The battle system is one of the most interesting, very difficult to get the hang of, but offers some truely epic strategic battles, sometimes insanely long enough to frustrate you but you get a sense of satisfaction afterwards.

If you have a good PC system and have everything on maximum detail, it looks and performs a hell of a lot better than the Xbox 360 version which has gotten too much flak because of it. The Unreal 3 engine isn't perfect itself, not to mention it is Square-Enix's first use of it.

The letterbox mode doesn't bother me too much as it hardly noticable on my LCD, but I can understand it being more of a problem for older CRT users.

I liked it, but it runs like pap on my machine, which makes very little sense since its the only thing that does. Didnt get too far into it, but from what I saw up to that point it was a decent game.

Also, the battles have QuickTime Events, during attacks sometimes a button comes up for you to press for extra damage, or when you get attacked you can press it to dodge, or even counter attack. Optional, but you have to keep on your toes.

I played it purely with a 360 pad, I didn't even bother trying the keyboard. Its just designed for the pad, being a console port, but its nice and simple. Analogue sticks are better than arrows for movement, and you just use the four buttons there for pretty much everything.

Runs on the Unreal 3 engine so its scalable, but can also look very nice.

Yeah those QuickTime Events are pretty gimmicky to be honest, but I keep them on anyways just to keep me alert and add a little more to the experience.

360 controller is definately recommended for this, but it does work surprisingly well with the keyboard. Space bar and arrow keys are very easy to use during the QTE's in battle. And you can change the on-screen button labels to match either as well.

Have a search on the forums for more detailed replies, but yes. Took an hour or two to get into compared to an FF game, but great after that, with stupid amounts of side quests/exploration etc.

I've completed it, took me 72 hours, it's pretty damn big, i didn't even do every quest and also there's a lot of secrets in the game.

Gameplay wise it's very nice if you like turn based rpgs with a lot of tactical strategy involved.(i.e you get formations for each union which can give you more beneficial stats, abilities, effect movement, adjustments to things and so on....it's quite a good system.)The only downside i had to the gameplay was that sometimes you'll be struggling where to go next and you can miss out on certain characters if you do not go a certain route throughout the game.(i advise using a guide whilst playing it so you can unlock the ancient ruins area which is very nice to have, i didn't get it on my first play through.)

However the music is brilliant i got to admit, the graphics are nice and it should be a somewhat decent game if you like the FF series you should give it a go.

Also The Conqueror is an awesome game villain.:)

Yeah I love how the battle music changes depending on the situation, i.e. if the enemy has advantage, or if you have the advantage, it goes anywhere from drum beats to guitar rock.

It's a shame that Square-Enix changed the role of The Conqueror somewhat as originally, he was supposed to have been a playable character following his story path.

Combat isnt. I have tried the demo and its more real time than anything. Plus complicated as hell compared to combat in ff for example.

The only thing real-time is the QuickTime Events, that is it. Real-Time would be something like Star Ocean 4 or Valkyria Chronicles.

The turn-based combat is more based on grid tactical strategy than anything which is probably why it feels different than traditional turn-based affairs.

No, it's bleedin' 'orrible.

Annoying characters with no redeeming features, gimmicky battle system which you WILL get sick of and it looks kinda pants as well. Oh and the story leaves a lot to be desired, it just doesn't flow as well as other SE RPGs.

Honestly the reason it fails is because it inevitably has to be compared to Final Fantasy and unfortunately it falls short.

I really like the idea but I got bored quickly. Right at the start they let you (somewhat) control a huge battle with a load of unions (squads) then you get dumped into using just 1 or 2 small ones for ages.

I think the battle system is quite good. Gimmicky in some parts yes, especially the Quick-Time Events. It could have been better, but the tactical grid system, only without an actual grid to see, works pretty well. I mean afterall, some of the people who worked on the SaGa series of games did this so there are some similarities and influences.

Yep that pretty much sums much of it up. Really makes it difficult for Square-Enix to produce any new IP's or series.

I recon The Last remnant could have done better had it been to what they originally envisioned for the game or dare I say, not use the Unreal 3 Engine. It may had helped for multi-platform conversions, which as the PC version shows, is actually not bad in their first attempt, but with no PS3 version due to poor reception, they dropped the ball for a potential new RPG series.
