'The Line is a proposed smart linear city in Saudi Arabia in Neom, Tabuk, currently under construction, that will have no cars, streets or carbon emissions.'

Saudis are building a 170km linear city that can apparently fit 1(or 9) million people into 34km^2(number could be wrong).

Anyway, it's a super dooper new futuristic smart city that looks incredibly compacted and some say a bit prison like, but maybe not, depending on who you ask.

So what do you think, is this the future for the world or just a another stupid idea from the Saudis and doomed to fail like the sinking man made islands in Dubai?

Or something out of Bladerunner.

"A new life awaits you in the off-world colonies, a chance to begin again in a golden land of opportunity and adventure!"

Completely impractical, and now they've released those visualisations with the continuous 500m high mirror wall skyscraper and and a narrow cross section it just looks even more silly than what I'd imagined when I first heard about the idea.

Will just be so expensive to build the infrastructure it needs, and transporting people and goods will be needlessly difficult.

Will woman still be treated like sh** and what about mass executions, their human rights record in this city of the future?

Any dissenters will be fully entitled to freedom of speech but not free from the consequences of having to leave the city. Criminals and dissenters will be free to do as they please once exiled from the city.

Exiles will leave the city daily via a small 1st floor door in the south side of the mirror wall around 100 miles from the nearest settlement at midday.

If it can be pulled off then why not..... Brave? Visionary?

We need to be thinking differently to what we have now, that's for sure.

But we have all seen the films and played the games - There will still be "rich" and "slum" areas through the natural order of wealth. Unless this isn't for poor people of course.

Like being in a theme park, nice for a while but you wouldn't want to live in one and everything you see only runs skin deep.

Will be built by desperately poor foreign people taken advantage of by ruthless agencies (passports taken away, working off debt, all sleeping in camps next to city). Will end up being an expensive turkey like those World Islands in Dubai and just comes across as gratuitous waste of time and money, I guess our equivalent of HS2.

Sea-level rise (global warming) might make the sea view internal too.

E. I wonder what it will be like living in a glass mirror (the Line) in the desert when we reach +4°c global warming.

Nothing looks close by, which is the idea of a city or built up area, proximity, no doubt whereever you wanna go is at the ass end of the line
