A mate at work recommended me this film, as one of the best war films ever. I looked into it and it seems to be about the omaha beach landing, like saving private ryan. It won two oscars but one problem, its black and white and, its only been given a PG rating so it cant be very accurate of war.

The longest day is probably the most historically accurate film account of the events on D-Day. It doesn't just concentrate on Omaha beach (though there was a lot of fighting there so it does feature prominently), there is also good accounts of the Free French at Ouistreham Casino and Pegasus bridge (Richard Todd, who actually fought at Pegasus bridge, plays John Howard).

If you're after more decent war films, try 'The Big Red One' and 'A Bridge Too Far'. Awesome stuff. I love catching some old B-rated war movies on a Sunday/Bank-Holiday sometimes
As modern war films go, I think you can't go too far wrong with 'Black Hawk Down' and possibly 'Jarhead', although the latter is geared more towards the boredom/anticipation of warfare, whereas the prior is more sentimental and gritty.
Anyway, less talk, more watch! If Schindler's List doesn't make you feel anything, you're not human.

Schindler's List isn't really a war film imo - it's about some German who helped some Jews escape the concentration camps.
It is a war film, it just isn't conflict orientated. A film about the holocaust easily falls within the scope of the second world war, therefore it's a war film.

you don't need a huge amount of blood and gore (pushing the ratings up) to have a very accurate film about something - the blood and gore might help emphasise one aspect of the landings, but a good director won't need to rely on it.
Likewise the lack of colour doesn't mean much.

It's still one of the highest regarded films of all time and is currently sixth on IMDB's top 250 films. It's worth seeing regardless.
Jew's weren't classed as POWS's. Schindler's List isn't a "war" film.

Got the two disc Region 1 in the perspex case. Great picture quality, and a great film.
I found "The Longest Day" to be a bit of a mis-mash, just thrown lots of famous actors in little sub-stories.

please tell me your joking, Schindler's list fully falls into the 'War Film' category, it was showing you another aspect to the war, war isn't just about fighting and Schindler's list shows that fantastically, it's shows not only how people were tortured and killed through the Holocaust but also how people took advantage of the war to make money, anyway the OP'er should love this film, it's definitely in my top 10.

Lookup the definition of war in a dictionary, it pretty much does mean fighting or conflict at any rate. I don't know why imdb have included it as a war film, but they've also included Casablanca, probably the greatest romance film ever too - are you going to recommend that to the OP as well? Just because a film is set during a war does make it a "war film".

The Longest Day may not be the best WW2 film (, that's "Where Eagles Dare" ) but just because it doesn't have Tom Hanks, blood spraying everywhere and a stirring Uncle Sam soundtrack does not automatically make it an unrealistic war film.
The best part for me is the epic Free French Commando attack. Another plus point is that the film also has Richard Burton in it, which is always a good thing in my opinion.

The Longest Day is a good film but Schindlers List is a great film albeit a completely different experience.

Well have to agree to disagree then because nothing will change my mind, war isn't just about fighting, it's about politics, money, power etc, the conflict in war is only one facet of war anyone knows that, I agree with Badbob when he classes it as a "Biography / Drama / History / War" film, but that still means it comes under the 'War film' umbrella.
