The previous MBP thread is 1,237 posts long and concerned with the Late 2008 model.

Let's use this thread to discuss the new ones, including the newly promoted MacBook Pro 13 inch.

I'm very interested in the quality of the 15.4" model's screen. Their 2nd generation LED-backlit unit, and with a supposed 60% larger colour gamut - could be something special.

Who's ordered or thinking of ordering one? Which model?

The 13" MacBook Pro is supposed to have the same high quality panel as well.
Nice - it's certainly had the five star treatment.

They said in the keynote that the MBP13 was cheaper than the Unibody MacBook previously was. Is that the case in the UK as well?

I suppose it would be more of a stretch to leave the optical drive out of models that are reasonably likely to be someone's only computer (MacBook, MacBook Pro), because they are needed (at least occasionally).

It would be cool to have the choice to (officially) put other components in its place, though :)

Speaking of optical drives, Apple still can't be arsed with Blu-Ray..

Still a comparitlvey low res screen on the 15" models :(
I definitely agree.

You have to remember that it's 15.4" and not 15", so, compared to the 17", it has:

82% of the area, yet
56% of the pixel resolution

Weak!

I bet it's purely down to Apple being able to buy 15.4" 1440x900 panels a lot cheaper rather than anything better being "too high density".

I ordered the 17" - should have it next week.

The screen resolution and ExpressCard swung it for me over the 15". I don't like how they've cheaped out with the SD slot. ExpressCard lets you have every type of media (including SD), eSATA, USB3 in the future, and a lot more.

Upgrading from a trusty 2006 MacBook.

I bet it is a software issue - I doubt there are many chipsets being produced in volume today that don't support SATA2.

If you have what today is a high-end SSD and are doing intensive I/O.

I think it's more "the principle" of a needless downgrade, and future-proofing concerns, that is bothering people.

I think the Unibody MB's screen got a stealth upgrade near the end of its life, so I'd imagine it'll be either than one or better.

Received my MBP17 - the screen (9C99) is majestic.

Edit - Here's a calibrated colour profile for the screen. Parameters in the file name. Screens do differ unit by unit, but give it a try if you have this model and panel version.

Are you a glossy or a matte?
Glossy. Allegedly the 9C99 panel used in some glossy speced machines is the best in terms of quality. The panels used for matte speced machines have been entirely different (not just a different layer on top).

That's kind of you, but I'm afraid it won't be of use to anyone other than yourself.

It simply refers to how the panel in your MBP reproduces colours under the conditions in the location in which you calibrated and with whatever changes were made to the panel's settings and/or the LUT.
I know just what it is. Ambient light compensation was disabled, the region of the screen sampled is essentially sealed off, and the influence of any custom software LUT is disabled before calibration. I even had a disclaimer about unit variations :/ It will be an improvement on Apple's supplied profile for the same panel.

That's good - I wonder if they would have addressed it had the forums/blogs not kicked up an almighty fuss.
