** The MacWorld Expo 2008 Discussion Thread **

Yeah i think that clue is about the apple TV. Will annoy me a bit though because I've got an older AppleTV that I will have to do something with.

I'm sitting here in Toronto now waiting for them to announce something juicy so I can get down to the apple shop and buy one cheaper than I could get it in the UK. I'm kinda limited by weight though so only a sub-notebook or something else similarly small will do.

They tend to lower the prices on new models, going on past trends (iMacs, Mac Pro).

Although if they do release something that's not priced lower it's almost the same price.

It's rare to see a new product priced over it's replacement.

Excellent! Pretty certain ill order a mbp next week then. I just hope they dont change the design too much, especially the talk about this extra large dual touch track pad thingy.

Every time I consider an AppleTV I always end up specing a Mac Mini. Basically they need to cut the server out of the loop. Having to turn a computer on to watch TV is only going to appeal to geeks.*

*I understand that the AppleTV internal drive is only a cache, and that media is streamed from another computer on the network. Correct?

as far as I understood it you can sync your videos to your apple TV as you would with an iPod but you can also stream them off your PC if you wish, for example of you didnt have enough space on your Apple TV

MacBook Air

I've heard various whispers about the new thin MacBook. Here are a few additional tidbits and confirmations about what might be coming from Apple on Tuesday.

- A slim notebook, but not a "sub notebook"
- 13.3" screen
- Not a "Pro" machine
- External Optical Drive
- It will be called the MacBook Air

A reminder, though, that Apple has been known to seed people with false specs/designs, so these whispers may not be accurate... but we believe they are.

I'd sprinkle it with salt but worth a read. They may have a point, what the hell is a "sub notebook" anyway. The Eee? It's a bit limited. When people talk about this sub-Mac they're really talking about a fully featured laptop. But small.

External drive? Not bundled knowing Apple. Expensive extra.

MacBook Air. Bleh, rubbish name. Sound like a pair of trainers.

If the MBP's get a spec bump along the lines of:

- Penryn processors up to 2.8Ghz with faster FSB to match
- 17" to get LED screens or 15" to get higher resolutions
- Bigger 7200rmp HDD options
- 512mb 8600's

I would be chuffed to bits and would order a BTO as soon as possible.

Anything else like a re-design, new incredible touch-pad or frikin' lasers on their foreheads would be an added bonus.

However, if those points above don't come to fruition I'm still going to order one and max out all the options.

So what would everyone's wish list be?

If you could have any product revision/spec?

I'm in the market for an iMac in the next couple of months and would be happy with the current spec, if I'm honest.

However, I am also wanting to replace my HTPC in the next year or so and go HD. So a Mac Mini/Apple TV crossover aimed at the HTPC market with Blu-Ray, HDMI and good sound would be corking :)

2 things I want to see:

1) MacBook ultra-portable - 64Gb Flash drive please, 12" widescreen.
2) 2nd Gen iPhone - 3G, 16Gb storage.

I think we could see a 16Gb iPhone next week, but I doubt we'll see the true 2nd Gen iPhone till summer / autumn :(

I'd like to see some iMac bumpage, as I'm in the market. iPhone v2 or a price drop on the current iPhone would also be nice.

For once I'm not too bothered about what turns up. A new apple TV might tempt me, as might a revised mac mini (dual core 2.4 and 4GB RAM? yes please!).

Increased storage on iphones again might be tempting but I'm fairly set on just getting another blackberry now (8120 I think).

I'm holding off on upgrading my mbp even if they do refresh them. Intel will have quad core penryn's in the notebook market by the end of the year and I want one of those rather than spending £1800 on a speed bump...

I want to the Apple Cinema Displays to get the upgrade they have needed ages ago, to go with my Mac Pro purchase in June.

If a revised AppleTV/Mac Mini is released I may be tempted to buy one.

It doesn't matter what they announce I can garauntee that within 20 minutes of the keynote finishing there will be a post/thread about how it was a letdown, or how somebody didn't get what they wanted :p

I don't know why I didn't think about it, but can anyone remember that Apple patent document about a "hub" device that was the centre of a multimedia setup.. a bit like the AppleTV, but better?

I'm thinking this new AppleTV (that I think they'll announce) will be greatly overhauled, perhaps even rebadged and brought out as this swanky new hub :)
