So I'm currently at uni in Loughborough, and in 2 years time when I finally graduate, I'm going to be looking for a job in the midlands, as thats where 99% of the engineering jobs are.

My girlfriend who is currently working in London is reluctantly going to move up and pick up a financial role that will get her chartership.

My question is: Best places to live in the midlands?

East or west?

Stratford up Avon, Solihull, Cotswolds, all nice places, surely depends on where you'll be working though?

East. It is dependent yes, not fixing down to anywhere, just getting ideas. I'll likely be working in the daventry/Gaydon/Northampton kind of zone.

Have you considered trying to get a job in/around London, rather than having her leave her job/friends/etc?

It has crossed my mind, but she's always said she'd come to me. Her job is more transferable too, there's a lack of engineering jobs in London.

Cor, didn't check this in a morning and all these replies!

Sounds like there are many opinions as to whats good/bad! Will be difficult to make a decision before properly knowing where we are both going to be working.

Unfortunately Mech Eng doesnt pay the highest amounts, but I'm looking at being on £26-30k out of uni, which is quite reasonable I think.

£26-£30k isn't what I would be 'expecting'. Its what the graduate roles are offering these days, and dependant on the company and if I would be moving into a more managerial role, I could be on £40k by the time i'm 30.

Never really thought about nuclear. The pay working for companies like Shell and BP makes working for them attractive (~£35k+) out of uni, but it doesn't really interest me. I'm looking at engines & powertrain.
