Happy Christmas all !!!
Just before I tuck into my dinner, something I would like very much some input on.
As your probarbly aware I'm in the position of trying to make the right decission for the 3rd and final time
And with the 5% on site till midnight I need to get this done by then.
So do I

6950 xfire ?... Heat and noise are my issues with this
580 ? ....... I don't want a 3rd 580 to be another bad clocker
570 sli...... This is my new option

Advice please

Enjoy your dinners !!

Well...
570sli is the same price (well a bit more) than crossfire 6970, because OCUK have the 6970 at £270 less 5%, and the 570 at £280 less 5% (so £20 less for crossfire 6970). A few reports have put the noise of the 570 lower than the 6970, but the reviews have them about equal, so there can't be that much in it (although I too am concernad about the noise). The 69xx series also scales a little better than the 570, so if going for 2 cards, I'd choose AMD.

The 6950 is better value than the 6970 though, and when in CF it should be plenty good enough. You'd also save a bit of cash and can add a quieter fan later (I expect one to become available) if noise is an issue.

So 2 * 6950 I think, or 2 * 6970 if you're feeling flash.

Don't think the 570 sli option will result in less heat and noise, probably more...

I have heard the 580 aint great overclockers...

6950 Crossfire would be my option...

According to this thread... http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-186-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

People are getting good OC results with MSI afterburner out of the box and voltage tweaking isn't available for the card yet so only better results to come.

This deal...http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-186-OK&groupid=701&catid=56&subcat=1752

Seems great 5% off will be just over £20 off with two free games and a 8gb USB Pen and free shipping!

580 ? ....... I don't want a 3rd 580 to be another bad clocker

So you've returned two 580's because they didn't overclock to your satisfaction?

Have you thought that perhaps none of them clock particularly well and some people are just full of it?

If I was OCUK I would stop selling parts to you based on you being a pain in the arse.. And returning stuff under DSR that we then get in non optimum condition.

You have made so many posts on this surely you know what you want by now!

BTW merry XMAS!!!

:D

To be fair I only returned 1 under dsr
The other I sold
Also none of it was bought from overclockers

6950 Crossfire = 406 pound (Around)
GTX570 SLI = 532 pound (Around)

This includes the 5% off deals.

You'd be an idiot to get GTX570 SLI over 6950 Crossfire.

I'm in almost the exact same position as the OP.
Except I was considering 6970CF instead of 6950CF as I have 5870 at the minute and 6950 didn't seem significantly better than getting a 2nd 5870 for 5870CF.

The 580s are a good price compared to other 580s, but compared to 570s they still seem very expensive.
So really my choice is between 570 SLI and 6970 CF. I too was under the impression that the 570 ran cooler and quieter. Performance wise I thought the 570 just had the edge too, but not sure if this scales to CF/SLI. I'm also wondering if a few driver releases will see the 6970 edge ahead of the 570 performance-wise.
I'm also wondering if I buy both now, or just get one with the option to add a second later.
I'm also hoping to make a decision by the end of the 5% discount offer.

570 faster, cooler, overclock great and no need to use dodgy ways to bypass overdrive overclocking limits.

So it is not a latest beta issue, it is your understanding issue and it WILL NOT change with future releases. Do I have to hide it more deeply and protect with dynamic passoword and shared passwords with true power users only to make you, guys, think and read prior to unlocking it? Honestly, I'm even really close to removing the unofficial overclocking path at all.

As always with Nvidia you get great SLI driver support, physx, cuda. With AMD you can drive multiple monitors of one card.

That's really not going to happen as the OP games at 1080p. And as said the OP loves to overclock, having to use unofficial overclocking can cause major issues with the 6900 cards and the afterburner creator has stated it's not getting fixed. Overclocking is much more straight forward with Nvidia cards as I have already pointed out.

You quoted Unwinder out of context........ He is talking about using unofficial overclocking switch and getting narky as he always does because a guy was asking about why the switch disables powerplay. MSI haven't got a 69** card to him yet so he can tweak the program to work fully with it.

The 69** series has dual bios so when one is released it should be easy to do what you like with it without fear of bricking your card anyways so it won't matter.

Oh, and as a SLI 460 owner I can only say Nvidias driver support is on the shady side of crap at the minute, no new releases for months and I've stuff needs fixing.

^^ A guy with a 69** card has issues with powerplay, unwinder points out that unofficial overclocking is not officially supported as it can cause instability/problems and any issues will not be fixed, how's my post out of context. If you are not in the know AMD cards have overclocking limits set in the bios, these are usualy very low limits, unofficial overclocking is required to get a decent overclock, a bios flash with higher default clocks will mean unofficial overclocking is not required but may render your warranty useless if the card fails.
