The MK3 MX-5: Opinions.

I thought you might have something to say about that mate :D

What did you think of the ones at Silverstone, compared to yours? They must have been fairly similar if yours has the fixed suspension and 6 speed?

Disappointed with the folding hardtop, the extra weight of the motor/roof high up isn't good for handling.

As said above, I feel I'm in a good position to compare the S2k and MX-5 having owned both. Anyway, I have to say, I am tempted by the supercharger conversion... 235-250bhp which would make it a really nice car to drive.

DE-TANGO ME

2006 2.0 with option pack (non-Sport), cloth seats and roof, 5-speed box, non-Bose stereo replaced with Alpine unit, lowered suspension, Eibach sway bars and front suspension tower bar.
Had it from new and it still makes me smile.

Needs de-tango'ing ASAP then it'll be beautiful .

I'm surprised no one has suggested a Z4? Love my 2004 2.5 litre Z4, best car I've ever owned by far :D

Beautiful as they are, it's not really in the same range as an MX-5 is it? More powerful yes, but also heavier and more luxurious, I imagine. And I imagine it has a price tag to suit, as well as running costs.

You said you were looking to spend 8k? That's about what my 53 plate 2.5 litre Z4 is worth.
Running costs aren't bad at all! I get get about 30mpg on average, with most of my miles being short trips to work. On a decent motorway trip, I can get close to 40mpg.
Servicing costs a bit more and tyres more expensive but overall it's not an expensive car to run.
Much cheaper to insure than an S2000 too. I certainly wouldn't rule out the Z4.

What colour is that Housey? Looks really shiny compared to the the Audi there which is just what I'm looking for.

I don't remember the name of the colour but it is a standard colour from their range. The pictures were taken on the day of collection so it's brand new in those pictures, unlike the Audi which was 3 years old and my wife's previous car which was being traded in. We actually got over book for that due to a small mistake by the dealer who priced it as a 170bhp model not the 140bhp version. I believe this is called win, I even told them if their mistake but they stuck to the deal. Good people at Perrys Blackburn, top service from start to end and I rate them highly.

Cheers, will have to look it up. It's just the press photos never show the lustre quite like yours does. Looks like it's just the standard silver on the website although looks more graphite in your pics.

I've used Perrys in Blackburn for parts for my old 206 and my MX-5 quite a few times, good guys there always. One in Clitheroe isn't bad either although just a Pug dealer, so can't get MX-5 bits from them.

Many thanks for all the replies, very helpful! Unfortunately I've been very busy the past couple of weeks, so haven't had time to revisit this thread...

Are there any particular issues to bear in mind when looking at these cars? Apart from the usual service history, owners, ages etc, are there any foibles or weak spots, or common issues to bear in mind? Ive seen a couple with higher than average mileage:age ratio which I know for most cars can be a good indicator of how the car has been used, but does this necessarily apply to MX5s? They aren't exactly motorway cruisers, so I was surprised to see a few three year old ones with 60K miles on the clock...

For 8K you won't be able to get a 09 facelift which is really the one to go for. With a larger front grill, interior and suspension tweaks and generally a better overall car.

I would consider the roadster coupe with folding hardtop, just more secure and better looking. plus it folds in 12 seconds (supposodely!)

I can confirm the roof folds in 11-12 seconds and takes no boot space, very clever and sits behind the seats like the soft top. It is also noticeably quieter than the soft top and I think this makes it a no brainer really as to drive the differences are very small.
