Ahoy,

I've noticed there has been a (seemingly) sharp increase in the newer Jaguars on the road around here, and a couple of my colleagues are actually planning on getting one.

This has sparked a somewhat lively debate here about how they hold up against the German car equivalents from Merc, BMW and Audi mainly. Obviously they seem to be a great car (though I haven't been in one for a prolonged period of time) and I have heard a lot of praise for their interior design, but aside from that I dont really know much.

I can obviously read up a bit but I wondered what the general opinions on here were, how do you rate the modern Jaguar range against the German marque, and any other manufacturers for that matter?

I have been considering a XKR and I have never thought about Jags in the past, they seem to be turning some good stuff out which is some achievement seeing they do not have the funds of their German competitors

I rate them just as highly as there competition from Germany, they have been producing some truly superb cars lately. From what I have read and seen on the internet, the XF is just as good as the 5 series or the E class.

The X-Type is complete garbage compared to the current 3 Series.

The XF is a very competent and credible 5 Series rival.

The XJ is probably a better car than the 7 Series.

The XK is also a fantastic car.

I'm pretty sure that they aren't building them any more, so it probably doesn't count as being in the modern range :) It was certainly slated to go out of production at the end of '09, I don't think that plan changed.

Do the RAF still get a discount on them? There are a lot of RAF bases around here so that might be why I'm seeing so many.

Having just bought a 3.0 DS XF Premium Luxury and having looked at everything in the equivalent ranges from BMW, Mercedes and Audi I'd say the current Jag range is the pick of the bunch :)

Don't get me wrong none of the cars are even close to being good, they are all great, but for me the XF just encompassed everything I was looking for, it looks great, has the best interior design (but not the best satnav...) and drives superbly.

In terms of the rest of the range, I've driven XKR, XK 5.0, XJ 3.0 D and all the engines in the XFs including the XFR and whilst they might not be the greatest at everything as a package each car in my opinion delivers as well if not better than the German equivalents.

One other thing as well the dealers I've dealt with at Jaguar have all been superb, not something that can be said about the equivalent brands...

Need to wait till Diamondmark gets back off his Suss he seems to know Jags better than most on here.

That's quite a compliment coming from you.

PICS!

Tata appears to have made a great success of taking over the ownership of Jaguar Land rover.

They've not messed about, and just let them get on with producing great cars. The XF was designed under ford ownership iirc ? so Tata can't take credit for that, but that for me marked the turning point in Jaguars fortunes.

A couple of cousins work for Jag/Land rover. Business is booming apparently.
This time a couple of years ago they were thinking of closing down a factory or two, now they are keeping them all open, and thinking of building another plant in china (just assembly, and thats only for shipping cost reasons)

The tatar guys have hired some really top notch managers that got shafted by their german competitors during the economic crysis and just leave them to get on with it. They also speak very highly of Ratan Tata himself.

Things are looking up
