The monitor I want... but cannot have.

My first computer screen was 14” CRT, which had a nice curvature of a medium-sized primary school globe and had a horrible anti-radiation (!) coating attached on the front. The originally white plastic had picked up a yellow tint rather quickly and if you were to rotate it a bit it produced a nasty cracking sounds so loud, it could wake your neighbours opposite the street. Ah, good old times.

Over time things had improved gradually and I moved through several CRTs to 15”, 17” and finally 19”. The 17” and 19” ones were flat screen, which locked like the picture was concaved a bit at first.

When I was a teenage my parents gave me my first LCD – Samsung T191 19”. It was by far not the first LCD on the market, but it was 19”, which was pretty cool. I still remember how huge it looked and how expensive it was (thanks again mum & dad ;)). I played Neverwinter Nights on it, the scene in the autumn forest and it image looked like it had “trails”, which at that time I had no idea why.

Then there were a lot of LCDs big and small, with a modest size growth over the years. All of them were used for games mostly, as well as a bit of moving and, of course, browsing. And now, more than a decade later I owe a 26” TN Samsung screen with some rather horrible colors and ridiculous viewing angles.
And so recently I have set off on finding and ultimate screen quest. I have been reading millions of reviews and opinions, searching and trying, looking and playing. Gradually I have managed to condense a list of I want my ultimate screen to be. If you are curious what that is that I want:
- 27-30 inches
- 16:9 aspect ratio
- 2560 x 1440 + resolution
- LED backlit
- Non-TN matrix
- Thing bezels
- 120Hz refresh rate
- DVI + HDMI + VGA + DP + Component inputs
- Built in card reader
- Built-in webcam + mic

And without inventing anything alien, it turns out my ultimate screen does not exist! Simple as that!

Indeed. I do miss certain aspects of the CRT monitors, though LCD panels are so much better now than the first ones about. I also had a 19" LCD panel, and it was washed out, blurry and lacked colour. My 22" Samsung is a LOT better, though it still suffers from poor response time, including artefacts due to RTA.

Now you have to put your priorities in order. Image quality, size or response?

My answer? Buy two panels, one beautiful IPS or PVA, and one 120Hz TN panel.

EDIT: You might want to remove those hotlinked images.

Well you can dream... If you pay me enough I can steal an OLED screen from Samsung that might fit the bill. :p But on a more serious note - your dreams will undoubtedly become a reality (less the LED backlight) once large OLED screens hit the mainstream market. Just don't hold your breath; you'll pass out.

IIRC theres a 27" 120Hz Panel (only 1080p tho) coming on the market that includes a card-reader :D however its very much a TN panel (not that its a big deal IMO unless your doing high end media production).
