In line with the recent video posting threads... here it is, in all its ... ahem, glory!

http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6504813154525836790&q=rusty+cooley

This is possibly the most taste barrier crossing thing I've ever seen or head, and its very very impressive!

The question is, it this just like men who train at the gym every day and end up like the incredible hulk? With guitarists like Vai etc then I would pause and slowly say no, but this is just, well guitar ******* :p

So my question I pose to you:

Is this aweful or really good? Or both? I'm going firmly with both! Whats your own veiw?

First of all there no doubt it takes immense skill and practise to do what he does but he is just shred mastering it up. He is very quick but to be honest it doesn't appear to be that melodic and its not easy on my ear at all.

I would love to have his ability though.

its definately both good and carp! ive been interested in rusty cooley for ages, it must take a hell of a lot of practise to get used to the fanned frets on his 8 and 9 string guitars!

Its obviously brilliant but the question is - can he do anything with it?
I've had guitarists in front of me doing solos but when they've tried to put it to music thay haven't got a clue.

You mean you have an ulterior motive for that nice thread of yours?

heh, i wouldn't say i'm warrioring with what i say - i couldnt even begin to write some of the stuff that he plays, i just dont have the theory knowledge to know what notes sound good in order, etc. i just have to trial and error if i write anything :p and physical ability? i think i'd need 50 fingers to be able to that stuff :p

And theres the rub. I once had two blokes in my studio who played about with skills for over a hour because I told them one of the notes they were playing was wrong. They could hear it was wrong but wouldn't have it because it was in the scale. I told them to wake me up when they'd sorted it and a hour later they put the note in I suggested. Its all in the ears.

haha, good call :p

i do agree that when i try and make a solo by ear and what i think sounds right it turns out a lot better than when i try and make it up around a scale.
but it doesnt seem to fit when it sounds right, haha.

I would never say that that was awful. I dont think any guitarist could. If you appreciate how skilled Rusty is then you know that he can play. He's completely in control and knows what he is doing and I think it is amazing.

That must be an old video. He hasn't played Jackson seven strings for years afaik.
Last i saw, he was playing 8 string guitars with fan shaped frets.

Looking at his website ( www.rustycooley.com ) he now has an 8 string Ibanez.

Anyway, about the video.

There's serious skill on display there, but i would call that a guitar work out, rather than a solo. I think he'd probably agree with me too.

I'm not even gonna watch the video after seeing 'Rusty Cooley' in the url :p

This guy's got amazing technique, but that's all he's got to be honest.

Impressivo stuff - but can he do it standing up and without wearing his guitar up around his neck?!

Its great to see someone just shredding out for no other reason than to p*** people off! Wish I could be bothered to sit in and master those techniques for hours on end. Notice how he locks his wrist and picks using his arm - that's the secret to fast and accurate picking kids!
