the most stupid question yet?

i have been wondering, whats faster wired 100mbit or wireless 300mbit. say the wireless is at full signal and the wired was cat 5e

the numbers make it clearly look like wireless. but i know wireless isnt as fast as wired at the same rate. just confused if anyone knows the differences would be great

AFAIK the "300Mbit" quoted is the maximum theoretical speed possible. Even if you had the router and adapter physically next to each other you would not hit this speed. As you go further away this speed will drop to a mere fraction of the quoted "300Mbit".

In comparison "100Mbit" ethernet will be consistently 100Mbit and the lag will be much less.

Also, if you can get 100Mbit ethernet - then getting Gigabit ethernet should not cost more. Most modern PCs use it and PCI/PCIe/expresscard Gigabit ethernet cards are cheap to buy and most cat5e cable will handle gigabit without problems.

Wireless tends to be less reliable as its prone to inteference from various things. Like your neighbours wifi. Its also far less secure, and more hassle to set up. It is nice to carry a laptop around though.

100 mbit stands a good chance of delivering 80 or in reality. Wireless n can do 300 under largely imaginary circumstances. I dont think i've managed to exceed 50 without wires. Cant be sure if that was the router, laptop or user error, so its probably possible to outperform 100mbit wired with wireless. It isn't certain though.

It kind of hurts to be living in an area where max speed is 6MB and working for an employer with unbelievable speeds.

Not a huge fan of BT right now, especially after registering for BT Infinity interest, getting an e-mail a week later, all excited only to have it say 'Sorry, BT Infinity is still not available in your area. Hope you are satisfied with BT Total Broadband'.
