Michael Birch the founder of Bebo has put up an announcement video about a new direction for Bebo.. It's actually brilliant.

Couldn't find anything about this on here so thought I'd share.

I for one would love to go back to the heyday of Bebo as I hate how seriously everyone takes Facebook.

You can register, presumably for information, too.

I never got Bebo when it seemed popular with 14 year olds and Facebook is far too big now for it to be challenged by a relaunch. Vid was slightly humourous though!

Good luck to them, if Google can't get it right then who can challenge Facebook?

no one unless facebook lets you download your whole profile and another website lets you import it.

people are to "invested" with the every day rubbish they post on it

Every bubble bursts.

but is facebook a bubble?
you can almost guarantee face book ofers what the majority of people on there wan and they will never even bother trying an alternative ever unless facebook messes up really badly and loses peoples trust

This.

Facebook is now the be all and end all. They won't risk it with stupid strategies.

Come now, that's being very narrow.

I'm sure people once thought the East India Company would've lasted forever.

Facebook is already alienating large parts of its user-base whilst others are simply growing away from it. The novelty will eventually wear off and something else will come to take its place. It's not a question of if, it's when.

I think that's wrong. Google+ might pale a little in comparison to sheer size of the Facebook 'supposed' user base but it is still very popular. I've been using it more and more recently and it is a refreshing experience.

Most people don't like change.
most people are not like us hardcore pc users who wil try alternatives.
It would be pretty much impossible to convince your family and friends to stop using facebook and join an alternative even if it were better so you are pretty much forced to use facebook to stay in touch with them

Most people are only on Facebook as it's the done thing. If a good enough alternative presented itself under the right circumstances, it would only take a minority to cause a positive feedback in exodus, and at which point Facebook's death knell will truly be sounded. That is, of course if people still have an appetite or need for anything similar.

Facebook if you remember started out as something else as it fulfilled a need. It has since become what it is today, which it quite frankly, tedious. Facebook worked best when it was simple, but obviously that isn't where the money is.

Think in terms of demographics, adults will generally tire of the site and teenagers will eagerly jump at the next 'in' thing. Such social media by its very nature is its own worst enemy. When the masses joined Facebook, it became nothing more than a dumping ground. No doubt, the same fate will inevitably await whatever succeeds Facebook but an initial honeymoon period with somewhere else will be all it takes to weaken Facebook's monopoly.
