The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Nice.

My brain had a “Sigma don’t make big M43 lenses…” moment and then remembered Panasonic went FF a while back.
Yeah it’s fairly recent I think. I really like the S5ii, the handling is so much better than the Sony cameras I’d had for a long time, and the video features are way, way better.

Did discover that the lens wont fit my tripod head, there’s a stupid bolt sticking up in the middle of the head, and no groove on the lens mount. Was annoying anyway so got a Sirui fluid head on the way off eBay. Quite rate my sirui CF travel tripod, this head will be going on my chonkier Manfrotto legs.

Yeh they are becoming more and more interesting lately. I'm not tempted to switch yet due to missing lens I use most, but they are packing a LOT of features into a cost effective body that Sony refuses to bother adding via firmware.

Yeah, the Panasonic approach seems to be to cram as many features into the hardware as they can through software improvements. The Sony approach is to artificially limit the capabilities of their cameras to make sure people have to go up to the more expensive model.

Just checked the Panasonic website, and here's the changes since I last did a firmware update!

Code:
We have improved an issue that sometimes caused parts of the image corners to be missing when the camera was moved with image stabilization enabled.
We have improved an issue where recorded videos could include noise depending on the SD card used.

Ver.3.5
Video recording stopped when the wireless connection to Support for LUMIX Smartphone App, LUMIX Flow or LUMIX Lab was interrupted. This phenomenon has been improved.
Circle-like noise appeared on the monitor when APS-C lenses were removed without turning off the camera. This bug has been fixed.

Ver.3.4
Improved compatibility
- The Bluetooth connectivity for pairing with DJI gimbals has been added.
* This does not guarantee all performance capabilities.
** Click here for information on verified operation of the gimbal.
- Enhanced compatibility with OM Digital Solutions' flash units.
- Improved compatibility when used with our interchangeable lens S-R100500 and teleconverter (DMW-STC14/STC20).
Support for LUMIX Smartphone App, LUMIX Flow ver.1.3 or above.
- "LUMIX Flow" is now available for use.
- External monitor function allows applying LUTs to live view.
- External monitor function enables displaying multiple frame markers.
- External monitor function allows showing focus frames.
* When using the external monitor function via wireless connection (Wi-Fi), the camera's video recording will stop if you turn off your smartphone's Bluetooth or exit the app during video recording.
Please do not turn off Bluetooth or close the app while using the external monitor function. If you want to prioritize the camera's video recording, please use a wired connection (USB).

Enhanced Focus Ring Operation for Interchangeable Lenses
- The focus ring can be used as a control ring, enabling for assigning key functions.
- The focus rotation direction can be selected as either clockwise or counterclockwise.
* A lens compatible with this feature is required. Please refer to the information for supported lenses here.
Additional Video Function
- Added "Shutter Speed Limiter" to the video menu.
Other Function Improvements and Enhancements
- Constant preview available when using flash.
- The startup speed when turning on the power has been improved.
- 17:9 aspect ratio for proxy videos has been added.
- ISO control method when using flash has been changed.
- Aperture can be set from F45 to F90 based on the L-Mount standard.
- When registering both photo and video menus into My Menu, common items will be reflected in both modes if registered in either menu.
- Operational stability has been improved.

Two big features :

Adding wireless smartphone monitoring is super cool, will be getting that installed.

Using the lens focus ring as a generic control, also super cool. Will give that a try and see if I can set it up to do exposure comp when in AF mode, (as my only gripe with the S5 is the lack of a dedicated focus comp dial).

Got the Valoi Easy 120 to enable me to scan my medium format film. At last I can shoot, develop, and scan all my film from start to finish!

Just had a quick play and it was pretty simple. I'll need a bit more time to get it all dialled in, sorting out the vignetting & flat field corrections, but I scanned this 30 year expired Fuji Super HG 100 I developed last year and I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Bought a Samyang 50mm f1.2 for X-mount to complete the set. Already have their 12, 21 and 35mm lenses. I don't think I've paid over 150 for any of them, and they are all superb.

Cat for bokeh demonstration purposes.

Very nice! Manual focus?

Yes, the full set is manual focus; it's their "AS UMC CS" models. I prefer manual to auto, and the auto is pretty pants on the XT-2 anyway.
I'll look into them. I also prefer MF unless the situation needs AF. I have a Samyang 12mm f/2.0 and it's a great lens. Got it for £40 off Faceache marketplace!

Ordered the Sigma 14mm f1.4 for Sony. It's a beast, though I was tempted to go for the F1.8 GM but over a period of 30 seconds the Sigma had 65% more light gathering capability. Just hope I have the chance for some decent weather by the time it arrives:

Lovely lens. Tested it in the photo show last year

Can anyone recommend a nice compact carbon fibre tripod for travel please?

So many options out there, would like some personal views.

Would be ideal if it folded down enough to fit nicely down the side of a backpack without sticking out the top or being too heavy that I notice it when carrying.

I’ve looked at the Peak Design Carbon and it seems it does everything really good apart from the ball head isn’t very intuitive.

Cheers. :)

I decided to consolidate my cameras and get myself in to the new age.
I had: Lumix GH5, Lumix GX8, Canon 5Dmk2, and various lenses. I shoot a mixture of stills and video so ideally I need cameras that are decent at 4k.

Sold the lot and bought myself:
R6mk2, R50V bodies
2 x EF-RF adaptors
RF-S 14-30mm (kit lens for the R50V)
EF 16-35mm IS f/4 L - used
EF 50mm f/1.4 - used
RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3

Absolutely stunned by the quality of footage and images I'm getting out of these. The increase in dynamic range over my 5Dmk2 is very impressive.

I really like the little R50V. It's absolutely tiny and so light. I can see me using this when travelling rather than the R6. A shame they don't do an addon EVF like they did for the M6mk2 (I actually wanted one of those but they are silly money on the used market).

Just been informed the seller is unable to fulfill the order due to lack of stock; this is in spite saying it was avaible when I ordered it. They've had my money for two weeks and other places were saying preorder for March. Rather than mess about I bought the 14mm f1.8 Gm instead. I'd a particular image in mind to take and having missed the aurora and the weather being what it is, I didn't want to be in that position again.

I’ve had one of these for 10+ years as my lightweight travel tripod :

Really solidly made, and a good price for CF.

I think that’s the most compact one I’ve seen since mine was discontinued. Mine can go down to under 30cm. I specifically wanted that because an A4 piece of paper is 297mm and I have a messenger bag that I can use and put it into. It’s the length of a magazine and sits sideways inside the bag.

Having also recently purchased the R6 mkii I have been very impressed with the image quality. On a pixel for pixel level it's every bit as sharp, if not sharper, than my outgoing GFX 100s. It of course lacks the resolution over the Fuji but having used it [the Fuji] for 18 months I realised I have no need for all that resolution - as satisfying as it is to pixel peep at it!

In terms of dynamic range, it's certainly a step up from my last Canon which was the 6D mkii although it had one of Canon's weakest full frame sensors and really struggled in low light at ISO's as low as 1600. I can't say I noticed much of a difference between the R6 and either my X-T5/X-E5 and the GFX 100s in terms of DR but I always found the Fuji cameras excellent in that regard.

All I'm struggling with is the colours. I've been solely on Fuji since 2020 and to say I have gotten used to the colour output would be an understatement - which is partially why I'll always have at least one Fuji at my disposal (currently the X-E5).
