Hi guys,
I'm new to this forum... :)

I'm about to buy a new LCD for my PC and I'm thinking about these to models
LG L1970HR,Viewsonic VP930B

I read here that the VP930 is well appreciated, it's long time in the market and I don't think I can "fall" if I choose that monitor.
Yet, a new kid came to town - the LG 1970HR which ON PAPER has very good specs, I never saw it in action nor have I read a full review about it and since it's new there are not many consumer reports. I did read somewhere that the "leg" (sorry for my lousy English) of the monitor (the things the monitor stands on) is a bit fragile.

Anyways, I was wondering if someone here heard something about the 1970HR or even better has any experience with it....

The VP930 costs here about 170$ more than the 1970HR., but I don't mind paying the diff if needed....

Thank you.

there's some early information about the LG L1970HR here if you're interested. You're right that the LG has some very attractive specs on paper. However, the one thing you need to consider here is the panel technology being used. The LG L1970HR is based on a 2ms TN Film panel and is certainly nice and fast and responsive for gaming. However, it does suffer from the draw backs of TN Film which are restrictive viewing angles (especially vertically), poor movie playback (quite noisy) and slightly poorer colouor accuracy and black depth. The last part about black depth has always been an issue with TN Film technology, but LG have used their DFC technology (more info on that here if you're interested) which does a good job of improving contrast (as the spec suggests!) and help improve black depth. Regardless, there are still drawbacks to TN Film panels, and i think the L1970HR is really a gamers screen mainly.

The Viewsonic VP930 on the other hand is using a P-MVA panel from AU Optronics instead. This offers much more all round performance than TN Film, with wider viewing angles, smoother movie playback, good colour accuracy an black depth, and also good responsiveness for gaming. It is arguably the best all round screen in the market right now. It has a lot of ergonomic adjustments and is backed by Viewsonic's full zero dead pixel policy on their VP range. It would be a good choice if you're looking for something a little more rounded. If you are looking for primarily a gaming screen the LG might well be a good choice, but until we've seen a bit more from it, it's hard to be 100% sure.

Hi,

Thank you for your answer. I was not aware of the differences between the P-MVA and the TN and it was interesting to read about it.
LG claims to be using a new chip that improves the video playback as well as the other parameters you mentioned (the black depth and contrast)

I guess if no reviews on the 1970HR comes out in the next week, I'll go for the VP930.

Cheers,

I would expect black depth to be improved somewhat thanks to the addition of DFC, it seemed to do a good job on the NEC LDC20WGX2 as well. They are marketing the LG L1970HR as having their F-Engine chip as well, but i would be a little wary about wonder-chips improving things. Sure, manufacturers do improve electronics and add control chips which can help, but the panel is still going to be limited by the fundamental features of TN Film sadly. Movie playback might well be a little improved, but this will certainly depend on how well they have controlled the heavy overdrive application since that can often lead to excessive noise (see Samsung 930BF / 940BF for instance) regardless of what they say they've added to clear issues up. Don't trust marketing too widely, i'd be interested to see a review of the L1979HR too :)
