The New Logitech Harmony 350 remote control

I've been thinking about getting a Harmony. Is the general idea that it replaces all your remotes? I have a Samsung TV, Sony BluRay, WD Play and a Popcorn Hour A210. I'm thinking this might be a good choice. Everything seems to be supported by the 350 according the the website.

Shame there are only 4 x direct source switching buttons... I was hoping for 5 or 6 because I occasionally hook up an iPad and/or a laptop as well.

At least its back to correct wand shape nopt like a tablet and Control for Play/FF/FR are in right place once again unlike recent abortions.

Only issuer if with the non screened models you cannot have buttons labelled for non standard or Extra settings, you would need program a key and know what it does even though label is different.

I am lucky I have a perfect Harmony One Advanced which you can not buy new now unless someone has one unopened but will cot a lot.

I found an unopened Harmony 900 before Xmas fr sake for cheap but it does not support Marcos for some weird reason though my model does but has higher REs screen and the Coloured buttons that my remote should have had but does not (dumb mistake).

Deal fell through as no call back 2nd time from seller, could have sold on for a bomb too if I did not use it.

Never had an issue with the IR bounces of any wall and finds device for all my devices but the 900 added RF.

looks nice physically, but I think it doesn't have enough "activities" as only has the one for watch TV. if you have xbox/ps/dvd/bluray/htpc etc then it becomes pretty useless.

I would like a harmony one with colour buttons as hard buttons, and maybe an IR repeater then I would be happy

They made one....it was called the 900.....;)

As you can see in this picture of my harmony 900

I hate the very low placement of the info & guide buttons on my Ultimate and it buttons I use all the time for looking at the info on sky movies & programs..:(
But i think it only because am so used to having the info & guide buttons high up on the remote from using the 900 & sky remote control for years..

I've got the slightly older model of this remote (basically looks the same).

It's very good fro what it does, very reliable and easy as anything to set up. As stated above it's the no-frills 'starter' one though, so only useful if you've got 4 devices max. Currently have TV, HTPC, NowTV and BT YouView hooked up. Previously had Sky on it.

Having had this remote for a couple of years now, it does now make me more likely in future to upgrade to a better model with more features so I guess it served its purpose from Logi's PoV. Jumping straight in at the £150-£200 mark for a remote is certainly a barrier.

Edit - think mine was about £30 so the current big river price looks inflated. Not sure it is worth that much

Timely thread bump. My MCE remote died and I'm bored of having 4 remotes in my living room.

Can you program this to fire key combinations at a Windows PC?

Edit: Ah, looks like it doesn't chain commands of a single button? Or does it? Would pressing one of the 4 device buttons change the input on the TV and power the device on and other things, or does it simply change the remote to a remote that controls the device you selected.

The harmony will do what you want skeeter. The activity buttons are set to put correct inputs etc for the devices you use for the particular activity. You can then set buttons when in an activity that may control different devices eg volume may be controlling your amp and rest of buttons may be doing your tv controls or tivo/sky box etc

Actually having read what you mean I'm not sure this particular harmony does do this for multiple different activities and you would want one of the more advanced options. I've recently upgraded my harmony one to the smart control as it was dying on certain buttons. I would thoroughly recommend it

I don't think it does do that Skeeter.

The selections at the top basically switch the 'mode' of the remote.

Although as heeed says you can have the volume remain with the tv/amp at all times, when you set up these 'modes' they either link to a device type (e.g. sky box) and therefore have all of the selections already mapped (though can be changed) OR you 'teach' it commands for unsupported devices.

You do this by placing the existing remote so the IR faces the harmony and then you take turns pressing the buttons, so your existing remote needs to have these commands in place already.

The 'watch tv' button is the only 'activity' and can be set to switch multiple devices on/off at once. For example again, turns on sky and TV and selects Sky as input. But it's the only one on this basic model, the higher up the range you go the more complex the scope for this becomes.

I will certainly be upgrading mine next time I buy some new equipment.

I thought that too at first glance but £50 is just the price direct from Logitech, if you click the more buying choices link underneath the rainforest themselves sell it for £25.

It seems ideal if you only watch cable/sat but the Harmony 650 is probably a better buy if you use more.

I'm looking for something that will do the following, which it seems like this will I hope (maybe someone can confirm):

1. Needs to control my tv, amp, virgin media as a MINIMUM.
2. Would like it to control my AC Ryan Media Player, soon to be replaced with a Nuc with XBMC.
3. Would prefer if it could turn on all my items with the touch of one button as thats the annoying bit at the minute, would need to turn on the tv, virgin media and amp at once.

Is this suitable or is it better to get something more costly?

You be better with something higher up the range. I use a 650 to control the TV+amp, Virgin, HTPC with XBMC and occasionally a WDTV. 4 is the limit for that one so if you think you'd use even more than that in the future then even higher up the range might be prudent.

It says it can replace 8 remotes on their website?

I only really need it to do 5 things!

I've ordered the 650 "Refresh" for under £50 from the forest, should do my needs nicely as my setup is the same as yours and I can settle for 4 devices if needed.

I feel like I need to get one of these at some point. Presumably it's possible to have it set so you can use it to change channels etc on a Sky box but the volume control will always control my Onkyo receiver, without having to switch modes all the time?

Yes. You only switch modes (activities) when for example you want to want to watch a bluray instead of Sky.
