The new VW Golf / Polo 'TSI' Engine....

Twincharged, think the idea is to give the economy of the small capacity engine when not caining it and the power of the bigger capacities when giving it some.

168bhp from a 1.4 is good by me :), reliabilty could be interesting though. Although being VW it should be ok i'd have thought.

I read... that the new VW TSI Engine will be Supercharged and Turbocharged...!

...is this really neceasary in a road car..?

Yes, it is the future of engines. Downsizing to reduce emissions but still having power available when required.

I do love how people think they know more than the Automotive industry though :p

Like VW would invest millions on engine development, NVH testing etc etc on the off chance it might be a good idea ;) :p

Would be nice to see a RR graph.

The fact it has both should give it a really nice power curve, making it very useable every day and easy to live with.

Plus I'm certain I remember reading that one has allready been tuned to 300bhp or there abouts for a racing series

The GT's are really nice, although they have been out for a while now! I think the supercharger is responsible for the power at like 1500rpm-3000rpm then the turbocharger takes over after 3000rpm. 0-60 in 7.9 seconds from a 1.4

I think the engine is love/hate going by the various roadtests...

Interesting engine though

The Golf is getting a 120bhp version I think as a replacement for the 1.6 FSI

But no supercharger

An initial review I read some months ago went along the lines of."...nice idea, works very well, however, you ain't gonna get the economy as it would mean running at very low revs hence defeating the point of the engine."
