Hey guys, been out the game since I got my 780TI last year. Im not looking to upgrade to the 980TI. I was wondering whats next for Nvidia? Or 'should' I upgrade to a 980TI?

I built a very high spec pc about 12 months ago for the release of the Oculus DK2. My machine is great, runs pretty much everything at 1080p Ultra. However with the release of the Vive and the consumer release of the Oculus imminent, I doubt that my once very powerful 780ti will run everything to the standard I wish. And the ever lowering price of Ultra HD monitors etc, are making me think.

But im fed of jumping up in power by small increments/%. My question is, do I upgrade to a 980ti, or wait for the next best thing, and what/when will that be?

Cheers all

Chris

Well the only news we have heard, is that big Pascal taped out last month. This means that the first next generation NVidia chip could well be the Pascal equivalent of the GM200 (980ti/TitanX), but whatever happens it wont be till well into next year, as the memory that will be used HBM2 wont be available till then.

ye i think if you wait now you could be waiting a long time

tho its doubtful a single 980ti will run most games at 4k
so if its enough of a upgrade for you im not sure

As far as Nvidia (and AMD) is concerned its going to be a dull, dull 10mths or so until the next 'big' thing I'm afraid.

..not that there are any games on the horizon that need anything more powerful than one (or two) 980Ti's though.

Now would be a good time to concentrate on clearing any Steam sale backlogs you have :)

Err, did you read my post? I didn't say NVIDIA wouldn't be using it. I said AMD have priority, so NVIDIA may not be able to release a HBM2 equipped GPU when they want to.

So you say AMD have priority and I said Pascal "will" be using HBM2, so did you read my post? :p I didn't recall arguing with you and just stated some facts was all.

AMD won't even have a card anywhere near market when NVidia launch their Pascal cards.

Now let me think, are HBM2 manufacturers going to keep the chips gathering dust or make a sale allowing NVidia to use them lol.

I hope so, the longer it is delayed the better. I'm only saying this as I got a 980ti and I don't want to see Pascal destroy it 6 months down the line. :p

It won't if NVidia follow their marketing strategy they will launch small Pascal well into next year and the performance will be about 20% more than a 980 Ti.

Big Pascal will come later with much better performance.

I would think AMD will be looking to upgrade Fury X to 8GB HBM2 ASAP, assuming they won't need to redesign the chip.

Appreciate the info guys, so its buy a 980ti now or wait for the 980ti to drop in price, which is unlikely until the next best card comes out! I may as well just say **** it, lets spend £500 on a card like I did 12 months ago! :)
