GarethDW said:Something else that bugs me about this experiment is that he says that idle, all the consoles were around the 50dB level and that using the cd rom drive the 360 & PS3 were hitting 60dB whilst the Wii hit 70dB.
Those figures sound way off target for a games console to me. According to Wikipedia, 60dB is the level of sound inside an office and 70dB is the equivalent of busy traffic from a distance of 5m!
Either all his consoles are broken and are very noisy, or his measurement tool is. Or am I missing something here?
Turn it off?disco Stu said:anyway to silence a 360??
zealot said:One you don't put the meter that close to the console to measure sound output I think it should be at least 1 metre away. and the tandy meter is no way near accurate enough for that sort of test![]()

I have all 3 consoles and playing games the level of noise is 360, Wii then PS3.
It is also not fair to run a comparison of '360 arcade titles, which, to be fair could be dig dug and doom, the Wii weather channel (couldn't he go to the Wii shop and buy mario?) and VF5 on the PS3, which is a 1080p 60fps 800MB game. A little unfair??
Also you can't take decibel readings with the meter on the surface you are reading from. Sound travels best through a solid object so having it laying on a shelf just totally ruins the whole test.
Test is a sham, sorry.

Last time I built myslef a gaming rig was a couple of years ago and I did buy parts, case, HDD enclosures etc to make it quite... Maybe you could quiten yours down by switching the fans for some zalman ones - if you havent already!Kronologic said:It harldy matters. All MY PCs running Idle are louder than my 360 , as soon as I do something that makes the PC's HDD or DVD player spin then the noise levels ramp up expinentially.
My 360 is silent in comparison to decompressing 6 360MB files simultaneously. I would even go as far as to say my work laptop is about the same volume idle.
Now maybe you guys have baught silent HDDs, fans and DVD players. so in comparison the 360 is loud. But for me it is quite, in comparision to other devices I have in the home.

fair enough.Kronologic said:The noise doesn't bother me tbh.
