I thought it would be a good idea to have a collective list of all the non-famous musicians you've seen so people can get an idea about them from real people. Just post their name, what instrument they play, style etc and most importantly how good they were. You can also add things like websites and gear but they're not really essential.

Would be nice to get a big list going. :)

Johnny Dickinson
Bottleneck slide guitarist - blues/folk
Tanglewood Parlor series

Johnny is from Northumberland and has a propa' Northumberland accent. So when he's speaking to you you're thinking "Ok..." but when he starts playing you can instantly tell he's something special. You can tell from his playing that he is someone to be marveled and when he starts singing it is simply sublime. He has one of the most beautiful singing voices I've ever had to privilege of hearing. :)

I'd give this guy 5 stars easily.

Clive Carroll
Fingerstyle guitarist - Blues/folk/traditional

If you've ever seen/heard of Tommy Emmanuel then you'll know that he is something pretty bloody amazing. Clive Carroll is as good as him and better in many ways. I'm not exaggerating here in the slightest. He is a bit of a strange person, a bit crazy but in a good way. He has that psychotic element of genius. He has an unbelievable level of skill with finger picking. He plays a lot of traditional Irish tunes and has really complicated rhythms. All in all he is amazing.. He has done three World tours with Tommy and I hope for Tommy's sake that he was on form.

This bloke is also worth of 5 stars.

Martin Simpson w/ Andy Cutting
Martin Simpson -acoustic fingerstyle/slide guitarist - singer songwriter - traditional/blues
Andy Cutting - accordion player

Martin and Andy were and are currently on tour as part of a program to promote acoustic music in Britain. Martin seemed like a nice enough chap (my mum disagreed with me on that one but there ya go :p). His playing was quite bland, but very impressive none the less. He was hitting pinch harmonics on an acoustic with a thumb pick which is no mean feat. The real amazement came when your eyes were drawn to Andy Cutting. He was truly one of the finest musicians I've seen. My knowledge of accordion players isn't massive but he would definitely rank somewhere at the top if I had a more expansive knowledge. He was a nice chap, a bit freaky and weird but a nice bloke and an amazing player.

On the whole I'd say, from a guitarist's point of view, the level of skill wasn't really enough to rival that of the likes of Clive Carroll or Tommy Emmanuel but it was very very good none the less. The accordion playing was a different story. He was truly amazing. I'd recommend that if you get the opportunity to see these guys, do.

John Tams w/ Barry Coope
John - Folk guitarist singer/songwriter
Barry - Piano/keyboards/backing vocals

This bloke won BBC folk musician of the year, one of his albums one folk album of the year and one of the songs on it won folk song of the year. I saw him at a local jazz bar and it was one of the nicest afternoons I have ever had the privilege of enjoying. It was mid afternoon, everyone was eating roast dinner and it really was lovely. The songs were fantastic and Barry Coope hit some of the most beautiful harmonies I've ever heard. John also did a monologue which was really good.

Again, 5 stars easily

John Ethridge w/ Chris Garrick
John - Guitar
Chris - Violin

Just got back from this and I quite enjoyed it. The guitarist was a jazzer and was very good. His solos got very very repetitive though as he seemed to only be playing runs, all be it very fast, all the time. There were a few pieces they did where he featured some jazz bass lines which were very good. For a couple of pieces John played a Telecaster with 5 strings and the E and A were tuned down an octave (obviously higher gauge). With this Tele he played the bass part on the bass strings and had his chords/solos going on over the top and that was very good. Chris the violinist was absolutely sensational. On one of the pieces with the Tele he made his violin sound like a muted trumpet which was impressive. But all round a fantastic player, made the gig for me. Absolutely superb.

I'll give them 5 stars purely because of the violinist.

The Cosmic Sausages

This really was an unbelievable night. Four stand up comedians playing music. It was absolutely hilarious. They had one of the best accordion players I've ever had the privilege of seeing/hearing. There was also a man on the mandolin, the guitar and the double bass. And the double bassist was the front man and he was hilarious. They were saying about how the UK is the most difficult country to find folk music in, so they delved deep and found this.. Then they played the James Bond theme which was fantastic. Then half was through the song they each in turn acted out a Bond sequence. The guitarist put some goggles on and held his guitar in front of him and walked around like a submarine. Then the accordion player walked into the middle and took his shades off. Then he smiled and had tin foil on his teeth to look like Jaws. :D :D I know it doesn't sound funny, but believe me, it was. Then they did the Star Trek theme and got various people to go "Ahhh ahh ahh ahh ahh ahh ahh" etc. Which was hilarious. They played Bohemian Rhapsody and got me up to do the cymbal at the end. :D They kept saying "Not yet" and giving me nods to tell me not to hit the cymbal yet as the song was so long. :p At the end I stayed and had a chat but the night was absolutely fantastic. There's a lot I've missed out here and trust me, if any of you get the chance to see these guys then go. It's an amazing experience.

EDIT: Had to mention this. One part they picked someone random from the audience to play James Brown when they did Sex Machine. They gave him a wig and some bling and sheet of lyrics. And he was singing it through and it was so funny. :D

(This was in a mega small village hall by the way and they where playing with no amps (bar a practice amp each for the accordion and mandolin).

These guys get 7/5 stars.
