The OCZ Vertex 3 Thread

Just looked at the Vertex 3 drive on the website and in the specifications it mentions Compatible with Windows 7, Vista, XP 32-bit/64-bit, Mac OSX but there is no mention of Linux.

Do these drives work with Linux or not?

Thanks for the reply.

Just looked through the install guide and it mentions Linux just no mention of Linux on the specifications page.

Thanks for the link.

I may go for one of the Agility or 2's instead. I know I could buy a controller card but if I get a chaper drive I can justify busying a faster one when I upgrade my PC and then shift the cheaper one to my laptop :)

It might be worth looking at the intel 510 as the 120gb drive is cheaper than the V3. I'm looking into the performance comparisons now but it's definitely worth considering the fact that intel's ssd failure rate is less than a quarter of corsair, crucial and kingston and almost one sixth of OCZs failure rate.

New PC up & running! :D

Looks about right?

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but DON'T use HDtune to bench.

HDtune uses non compressible data which means you seen the sandforce controller in it's worst case scenario.

Most data is compressible so you will not see this worst case scenario.

So if you use HDtune and get crap scores you know why.

The whole reason sanforce controller drives are faster is because of this on the fly data compression.

I'm keeping my X25s for now...though I've taken them out of RAID 0 and surprisingly they feel quicker than my RAID array ever did.

My next "big" upgrade will b e a 6/8/12 core SB.

Hi all i was thinking of buying this drive well the 128gb version or the 256gb version to install on the Asus P8P67 EVO which uses the Marvell® 9120 controller, would i get the best from it ? or am i wasting my cash

and what about the the Marvell® PCIe 9128 SATA 6Gb/s controller with HyperDuo function* which the deluxe version of the motherboard that uses a slightly different chip ?

as i have not bought the motherboard yet and deciding which to get to use with this drive

cheers

Are you sure it doesn't have the Intel controller

My P8P67 Pro has the Intel Sata 6Gb/s controller and runs the drive full speed (see above).;

actually we are both right i have just downloaded the pdf of the manual and it says the asus motherboards have.

2 x Marvell serial ATA 6.0GB/s Conectors = Navy BLue Plugs

2 x Intel P67 serial ATA 6.0GB/s Conectors = Gray Plugs

4 x Intel P67 serial ATA 3.0GB/s Conectors = Blue Plugs

so it looks like you have a choise between the use of marvell or the intel 6GB serial ATA ports is this right

i gather you are using the gray ports for your SDD drive. ?

so basicly i can buy this drvie and get the most out of it then ? on this motherboard but as long as i dont use the marvell ports.

why can the marvell ports not be used whatr sort of drives would you use these on then ?

thanks

Anyone using gigabyte P67 boards getting a BSOD when they install windows? (first boot)

Im using a gigabyte (H67) board and had the same issue, replaced the board as i thought it was faulty, replaced the drive as i thought that was faulty and get the same thing.
I am assuming it is in AHCI mode you are having this problem ?

Mine would install then on the very first startup screen it would BSOD and continue to do so.

I had to install using raid mode, just change the AHCI to RAID untill Gigabyte finally get this sorted in there bioses.

Besides it beats IDE mode.

Check out my thread HERE

Thanks mate. I just found my own solution in the last 5 minutes :) I just booted into safe mode and it says setup cannot complete in safe mode. I then rebooted and it continued with the install.

Clearly a drive issue but OCZ are blaming Gigabyte. I can install fine on my X25 and Vertex 2.

I thought I recognised your name on the OCZ forum!

But the 510 has slow writes and slower reads does it not? I'm pretty happy with the OCZ assuming the windows install is the only issue I have with it.

Yup, correct. I saw the board had Marvell once I had ordered it, and it lists the Marvell/Intel ones in the manual, so I just plugged in accordingly.

I have my SSD in the Intel 6Gb/s port and it's running full speed (see bench above). My other drives are mostly in the Intel 3Gb/s ports, and I think I stuck my DVD drive and old storage drive in the Marvell ports simply because they were easier to get to at the time.

Any mechanical drive will generally run perfect on the Marvell controller, I have one of mine on there and have lost no performance at all. It's just the Marvell controller isn't any good at going 500Mb/s+

Only problem with having all these controllers is it has to post about 600 times .

Is there any way to disable the Marvell controller if I'm not using it? So it doesn't post?
