The OCZ Vertex 3 Thread

Does anyone have much info yet on which 6Gb/s cards get full speed out of the V3? I read somewhere that most of the cheaper ones use Marvell controllers.

Don't bother with a U3S6 :(

Really need to get thinking about a Sandybridge bundle now..

Or perhaps RMA the controller and Vertex 3 and settle for something cheeper? I seriously doubt that you will notice any difference between a Vertex 3 and a C300 for instance - I didn't.

If you don't have a sata 3 Mobo it's useless to get a Sata 3 SSD as you will never reach the maximum speed even with a controller. Because of this I decided to get the best Sata 2 SSD, which imo is the new Intel 320 Series.

Nah, bought it from somewhere else as I had a BOATLOAD of vouchers for that shop :)

Plus, I just look at it as future proofing :D

May I ask what speeds you were getting without the card ?

You may, but I don't know! I bought them at the same time thinking "yeahhhh!", but now it's more of a "mehhhhhh". I want to test it on the onboard ICH controller, as that would solve the split booting issue I have if it's a similar/reasonable speed..

Planning on testing it this weekend sometime, so I'll try and give an update later.

Update: Okay, I've done some testing now:

Not too bad - write is far, far better, but reads suffer from the 3G limit..

What is the latest firmware on the Vertex 3? Has there been an update yet or is the latest firmware still the one that comes on the drive.

I had a look around on the support site and their didn't seem to be any other firmwares for the Vertex 3? In anycase, why would you want to upgrade when it does what it says on the tin?

Dodgers, you need to install the U3S6 on the lowest PCIe 16x lane on you're mobo, also install the v 1.0.0.34 marvell controller drivers to get the max performance out of the controller, I get speeds of a little over 400MB Read and 220MB Write.

The Marvell controller is limited to 5GB/s so that's probably the max performance you get out of the card. Unless maybe in the future they release a better driver.
If you want to reach the full potential of the Vertex 3 you need to upgrade to Sandy bridge with Sata III.

Also at first I had 2 videocards in my pc and had the U3S6 on an 8xPCIe lane.
It was way slower, so i removed 1 videocard and now only use 1 and have the U3S6 on the lowest 16x lane.

I've tested 5 different drivers all were terrible except for the 1034.

I will post an screenshot of my ATTO tomorrow.

Yeah, it's in the x16 slot (electrically x4 apparently :( ) - wouldn't fit in the x1's as they have the back in place on my mobo :) I'm still on old faithful (hah!) IP35Pro..

Where did you get 1034? Windows seems to have found 1042 for me, but Asus have 1032 on their website as the latest!

You can find the driver on techspot or x-drivers just google v 1.0.0.1034 driver, the latest is not the best driver, the windows driver is the second best after the 1034.

You only get the best performance if you put the U3S6 in the lowest 16x slot, if you put him in the first you won't get similar performance.

I don't know i have a HP XW4600 workstation with these specs:

Chipset: Intel X38 Express North Bridge/ICH9R South Bridge
Processor Socket: Single LGA775

I am not that technical is there a specific name for my motherboard?
