I posted this attical on HeadFi.org back in 2006 and think it would be great to have it on ocuk as many are buying the Sony EX90, EX85 and EX082(free with Sony NWZ-A800 mp3 player).

**************

After owning these semi IEMs for a few days I’m convinced with a little bit of modding they are near to the same standard as Hi-end IEMs such as Westone UM2s

Problems with Unmodded EX90

No Isolation

Although great sound - its a little thin compared to the best

The isolation problems are dew to 3 small holes on the main driver unit. They both let sound out and in.

To solve this, use cling film (tape didn’t sound as good to my ears) - I find about 4 layers works best. Not only do you have isolation, but WOW THE SOUND.... Its big and punchy - the bass is superb. The sound signature is a bit on the dark side and very similar to UM2’s – but that’s not a bad thing… the only difference is UM2’s have a bit more detail, but at 3x less cost who is complaining!

Now we run into one big problem – having sealed the unit – the main drivers may be damaged by putting in, and removing the ex90’s from your ears. You may hear a little crunching sound or a pop.

To solve this you have to add a little “venting” to the headphones – put a small pin hole in the cling film where the middle opening is on the main driver. Beware don’t make hole too big or it will brighten sound too much. Hole should be about 0.5-0.8mm big and visible!

Unfortanly the vent does take away 25% of the great sound, but still a huge improvement over stock EX90’s.

I’m also experimenting with foam covers too.

Does anyone know of a way of counter acting the pressure on the drivers when the unit is sealed air tight?

The germanium mod - thanks mate - here's instructions from kramer5150 how to do it! Ive not tried it myself yet, but it improves mids greatly :)

"I used a dull x-acto knife and scraped the perimeter of the mesh grille cloth away, down to the bare plastic material. The remaining circle portion of the cloth pulls out easily with a thumb tack. Pull the little foam piece out with the thumbtack and set it aside. You can always slide it back in and use it a s a wax filter (I do this with my moded koss plugs). I used a damp paper towel to clean up any scrap plastic shavings from the sound tube.

Upper mids are now MUCH more in cohesion with the treble. Theres a nice smooth treble / upper midrange transition, which wasn't there previously.

Clarity seems to be improved across all frequencies too, while bass still has impact and depth. Listening to Diana Krall "Peel me a Grape", acoustic bass lines are SMOOTH and very articulate. Theres definitely a layer of detail resolution that was not there before. Same goes for her vocals... some added breath and vocal texture that was missing previously.

Surprisingly I don't notice much change to the soundstage separation. Center stage definitely seems more alive and present than before, but spatially there still is a nice sense of distance and L/R separation (for a canal-phone).

All I can say is WOW, theres some stellar detail resolution lurking in these little cans."

Bought some EX85s the other day. Very impressed so far, and far more portable than my HD555s!

I'll give this mod a go

A quick question though, where exactly do I put the cling film? Just over the grey part in this image? Or do I have to take something apart?

I'm not clear on how the cling film actually stays on...

owned them both, they both are pretty phenominal earphones for the money. more so the ex85's tbh and yes, they are every bit a challange for the mylarone's and 100x better built.

james.miller - was it my imagiantion, but did you get your D2 stolllen? I had a Creative Zen Vision M and Sony S703 pickpocked off me in a space of a month :(

Back to topic - EX85's best value headphones and moded can match headphones costing over £100 - all for something that can be had for £27!! The EX90's are spose to be the same but metel casing - but Id say they sound better IMO - perhaps better matching drivers etc.

About to do this myself, can you clarify where the cling film goes?

around the body of the earphone, as veg's 2nd picture shows. make sure its sealed up nice and tight.

Veg - yep, got stolen. still have my sony and ex85's though. did you see they finally found the key combination to access the service menu on the 81x players?

What sort of price should I be paying for either of the models?

Don't want to end up paying over the odds, or getting sucked into buying some fakes.

£30-£35 for mdr-ex85's in the uk. probably about £50-55 for the ex90's i guess. you may well find them cheaper, but get them checked out first. dont even bother with ebay

Wicked, cheers!

I got my EX85s for £30 yesterday from an established website, there was some going for £23, but from a home seller and I wasn't about to risk it considering the vast number of fakes knocking about.

Very glad i found this thread! I had been looking for replacements for my (quite frankly rubbish) CX300s, and after reading this thread thought i would give the EX85s a go.

Have just spent this morning playing with clingfilm (what an awful material to work with...), and they really do sound great! Personally, i found just a single layer of clingfilm worked a treat - 4 layers seemed to overly reduce the bass, and a single layer helped to boost the midrange whilst not sounding overly bright. Unfortunately whilst making a hole i did push a needle through the foam/paper that fills the existing vents. Im not 100% sure if this has had an impact on the drivers, but its something to bear in mind - i was not happy having put a hole through a £30 pair o headphones within hours of getting them!

I must admit i have had no experience of high end in-ear headphones, and had been thinking of going for a pair of shures etc, but i am very happy with the sound of these headphones - thanks vegetarian!

Sorry about the pin - you do have to be careful ;) But they are great headphones for the price - no need to buy hi end ones IMO once modded. What I cant understand is why they made the ex90/85 open vented when they sound so much better closed like all the high end IEMs.

Got my EX85's this morning for <£15 new, very impressed although I'm not used to in-ear phones and the are a little uncomfortable even with the smallest buds fitted. Hopefully I'll get used to them, I might try this mod soon.

After dead um1 I might try these. The um1 were the most comfortable things in the world so I doubt these will be anywhere close, but the SQ is most important.

O btw how good is the seal on these ?

There is no seal you'd need triple flanges to get a seal as the default buds are way too short so you cant get them in your ear enough.
I have tried the mylarone double flanges on mine and they still aren't long enough to get a seal so something like the shure flanges below or ideally something even longer is required.

I think something like these is needed this sort of length

The default tips give a fine seal! I have the medium tips on my EX85s and with music playing at a listening volume I can't hear anything around me.

Was just about to try this. Got the cling film out ready to roll and I couldn't find a pin. Funny thing is I found a pin lying around the other day and I can't remember what I did with it :o

I'll have to hunt around the house for one later..
