The Official 5830 Thread!

I think they do that on purpose Nickg - I have a small 23" 1080p HDTV that won't do native res properly with computers. Lower scaled res fine, but the full pixel sharpe res and it goes to pot. So frustrating. That's through VGA - I haven't tried HDMI which may fix the issue.

What do you think of the actual card? Had nay chance to play games yet?

no i only got windows installed by 11pm as i had football before that - then just did all the chipset, sound, catalyst windows updates. id had enough by half 12 of messing around so left it there...and went to bed - just happy it had booted, as the PC i made on wednesday with a different mobo blew a cap on the first boot...

no 3d usage but the card idles at about 30c or something so quite cool.

thing is, i was using a 8800GT and then a 6800Ultra before the ATi and they ALL filled my 1080p screen properly straight off the bat.

this is with a DVI (from GFx card) to HDMI input on TFT via a DVi to HDMI belkin cable.

issue seems to have cropped up here:

http://forums.amd.com/game/messageview.cfm?catid=279&threadid=134050&enterthread=y

i also have a netbook i use downstairs it has a lowly 3410 ati chip and that outputs a full screen image on my 40" samsung 1080p via hdmi...

thats pretty frustrating to me at the moment..

That is frustrating - my problem is with the TV, but since you've had yours running with older cards then it must be possible to get that output from the 5830.

After all this time drivers shouldn't be causing crap like this. Hope you get it sorted.

i know. but having scoured RAGE3d the ati fansite, i hear i might be able to enable GPU scaling and that i can scale the image to full size.

but really i mean 1080p is 1080p i dont know how it could need scaling to fill the tft native resolution?

oh yea that 60hz is also broken is a frustration too, so even if i do manage 1080 overscaled it will still be 50hz not 60...

what other catalyst drivers work for the 5830? i just grabbed 10.5 cos it was newest but i might try an earlier revision to see if the problem was present previously.

Still having driver issues... Should have just stuck with 10.2 in the first place. :p (Ended up rolling back to 10.2 because 10.5 gave me so much trouble).

Downloading 10.5a now, I'm going to do every cleaning type scan I have on my computer to get rid of 10.2. :p Fingers crossed....

COH? 3D sounds fun though, might have to look into that one day. :P

I'm stuck in the middle of a dilema chaps! the layout of my system and the super duper cooling I have means that in a way it'd be rude to not add another 5830 in CF, but the prices are up slightly now (I paid £165, the same place now has it at £175), and I don't actually game an awful lot. At the moment I'm playing Grid, and nothing else. The only other game I'm planning on buying in the future is Crysis 2, which is apparantly going to be a console port so the 5830 should run it well enough as it is...

I just hope they don't dissapear off the market before I get round to getting another Powercolor one. :/

Although once I have the second 5830 and an SSD, that'll be me done pretty much for this build.

Found another article that is a pretty good read:

http://www.insidehw.com/Reviews/Gra...raphics-Card-Round-up-Spring-2010/Page-5.html

Looks like the 5830 is roughly half way between a 5770 and 5850, but slightly closer to the 5770. In price though, this is not the case. :p

To back up my comment about the neatness of those benchmarks and them pushing the GTX 470, these show a much better 5850 showing as do many other sites.

Don't you just love review sites!

Yeh they did look a bit neat. :/

Yet MORE ati driver joy! I've gone to 10.5a, seems to be working OK, apart from now it's idleing at 400/1050....

Idle temps are now 44C, and when gaming it goes upto 55C. So all that 10.5a has done for me is raise my temps. Nice!

Yeah, loads of people have complained about the idle clocks being raised. I thought it only happened when you overclocked though....

You are definitely making me never give up the 10.2's with all this! :D

Haha, seriously dude NEVER leave 10.2 behind, you'll only have more hassle. :p

Apparantly it raises the idle clocks when you're using dual monitors, but mine has gone silly high!

Just out of interest, remind me what the Powercolor idles at with 10.2?

EDIT: Although my 3DMark06 score has gone from 16901 to 16948, every cloud and all that....

COH - company of heroes

the first game i had froze but windows wasnt locked up - so i have deleted some sound drivers which seemed dysfunctional and faffed around with a few things but then compleetd a 20min game

gfx was good, maybe a tiny bit of micro stutter occasionally but i dont know if that was gfx related or more hdd access or something?

I can't decide what to do now, stick with it idleing @ silly or go back to 10.2... :/

I left the CatalystMaker a twitter message asking him why on earth they've jumped so much.

Idle speeds going up roughly 3 times surely is not needed.

If I can't sort these idle speeds I'm considoring just going back to 10.2 and sticking with it. The only difference I can see with 10.5a is a 0.3% performance boost in 3DMark06. :p

Windows seems to load faster with 10.5a. Think I'll just stick with them now, after all I doubt idleing at 400/1050 will actually do it any damage, otherwise they wouldn't have done it. :P

The only thing that could be a risk is if the idle temp was constantly very high, but it idles at around 43C, so it should be fine.

my 5830 crashes every time i play coh wih a bsod... i tracked it down to the ati driver kernel on my 10.5a install:/

This was likely caused by the following module: atikmdag.sys
Bugcheck code: 0x3B (0xC0000005, 0xFFFFF88004C2A6DF, 0xFFFFF8800836F240, 0x0)

not good!

Mine hasn't crashed all day. Good times. :P

I uninstalled 10.2 in Windows, then went into safe mode, ran driver sweeper on it, then CCleaner (disc and registry cleaners), then Eusing Registry Cleaner, then booted into Windows normally, then CCleaner, then Eusing, then defrag, (needed it anyway), then rebooted, ran the installer, it told me to reboot, then CCleaner, then Eusing, then rebooted.

Big old uber OTT list, but it worked. :p I ran them again just to see how much garbage 10.5a would put on for me. Answer was, a fair old wedge!

good stuff, mine could be down to a system instability im prime testing increased voltages now as in my crash log i also have

On Sat 05/06/2010 15:09:12 your computer crashed

The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect, possibly the culprit is in another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time.

which i am guessing is cpu/mem related.
