The Official 5830 Thread!

I would be interested i the answer too, also any better at over clocking than others. Been told shapphire on 58xx isn't that good?

Or should i just go with a 5850 coz of the limited bandwith on 5830?
 
From what I can tell, the Sapphire 5830 is the best to overclock of the bunch.

If you can afford/justify it then the 5850 would be a far better option.

Thanks for the advice :) Problem i have with buying the HD 5850 is that it is a good bit over £200, and I can't really bring myself to spend that much on a card, while I can find a 5830 for about £170 and it performs decently for someone like me who would only play games every now and then.
 
Just read about these new Southern Island GPU chips that will be released later this year. Is it worth holding off for them? Or would a HD 5830 still be a good card to buy at the present time?
 
well i couldnt resist i found a 5830 for £150 shipped, new...and pulled the trigger...only £20 more than a 5770 and lots of memory bandwith which should see fewer low FPS situations

hoping for the best!
 
dunno its like an own branded model from the shop, it could turn out to be a sapphire or something maybe worse !

it was so cheap though almost the same prize as a tarted up 5770 and because i do 1080p i hear the 5770 is a bit of a weakness at this level...so i stumped up the extra £20 for the 5830...

im hoping for the best, and that it is a tangible improvement from my 8800gt:)
 
Nickg, you'll be happy. A 8800GT is a nice card, but the 5830 is a big step up. It's a nice stepping stone into DX11. When you think about it, why buy the expensive 5850/70/Fermi when we don't even have enough DX11 games to judge them by yet?

It was similar to the 6800 series from Nvidia and Shader Model 3 (SM3); people bought expensive Ultras for next gen support, but they couldn't run mainstream SM3 games well once they started to become the norm. We had to wait for unified shaders.

I intend to use the 5830 as a transition card, then get the next gen refresh once we know what's needed for future DX11 games. If they become tessellation heavy, the next gen DX11 will be where it's at. In the mean time, we get to put our foot in the water!

Is it just me, or is it at some places instead of the 5830 coming down in price, the 5850's have gone up in price? High prices seem to be the norm and don't look like coming down anytime soon. I expect the 5830's to sell well once they hit the sub £150 bracket, if any exist by then (if 5870 yields improve, this card may disappear or be replaced with a different model).

So far today, one freeze under W7, nothing under XP. I'm going to leave it on tonight to see if it freezes up, but I don't expect it to. I'm pretty certain that it'll turn out to be my W7 install that's playing up.

The XP one is playing up aswell. I can't open my computer, the Window is just blank and I have to end explorer.exe to get rid of it. xD

Dual boot sucks kiddies.

EDIT: BSOD anyone? Any takers? I had a problem not so long ago that was resulting in BSODs all the time, didn't get time to write the error down this time. That was down to a knackerd Windows install/driver, maybe since I've reset about 30 times in the last few days, I've remade the same issue....

Look at the first post, several reviews there. General consensus is the scaling is roughly 100%. (Sometimes more!).
 
I haven't been testing mine much today. This morning it was fine, booted it up just now and fine.

Muel, did you get a black box on screen or something? Also, when you froze, did the system seem to gradually slow down to a crawl first? I've had mine do both these things.
 
Nope, it literally just freezes up like in the olden days of Windows 95.

I just had a BSOD earlier, and then it froze up. Now when I try to boot, I just have black screens.

Something is afoot here....

News! Doesn't matter whether I use the 5830 or the 4670, I get the same issues. I managed to get my stuff backed up though, going to try wiping my hard drive and reinstalling to see if that helps. :/

Could be something else that's died of course, but the dual boot needs wiping off anyway so It can't hurt to try reinstalling first.

EDIT: OK can't get that to work now. :( I've unplugged my hard drives, reset the CMOS and I still can't get an image on either monitor. Not fun times at all.

How can we both have PC issues at the same time - it's so weird.

Are you saying no image with the 4670 also? EDIT: I see it doesn't matter. Strange, you have a quality PSU too....

Just removed all of my power extenders, appears to post consistantly now...

2 are brand new from OCUK for the PCIE, 2 are ones which I braided myself for the 4 pin and 24 pin on the motherboard. The 24 pin has been tested and used before, the others haven't.

Maybe I rejigged something else whilst doing that, or one has a fubared wire/connector in there.

EDIT: I'm now on my W7 install! Just slowly reconnecting things and testing stuff. My cable management has taken a severe hit tonight... :p
