***The Official Core i7 Overclocking Thread***

Can you guys answer a few questions for me, I'm looking at this upgrade from the spec in my sig.

Intel Core i7 920 2.66Ghz - OEM
Gigabyte EX58-DS4
G.Skill 3GB DDR3 NQ PC3-12800C9 1600MHz

Any gains to be had from the more expensive boards?
Will I notice a loss going from 8Gb to 3Gb of ram?
Whats the chances of this hitting 4Ghz under water?
Is the 1600Mhz ram worth it over the 1333Mhz stuff?

1) Currently all the boards seem to perform almost equally.
2) Sorry can't help with this one, I went from 8GB to 6GB, no real noticeable difference.
3) 4Ghz under water? fairly good.
4) Just get the 1333Mhz stuff

Thanks for the replies. I will be using 64bit even with 3Gb as I have 2Gb of VRAM.

Think I will stick with 3Gb until prices drop.

Will it clock just as good with the 1333Mhz stuff?

I'm about ready to order.

You just use a different divider with slower RAM. I have 6 Gigs of 1333 and I ran it on the 6 Divider for 4Gig (4.2 with Turbo)

Cool, let me know how you get on. Oh, I had to buy an allen key half way through my build to put the new 1366 plate on my EK Supreme. Have a look at your waterblock, you may need one!

I just called and changed the mobo to the UD5 as the DS4 is crossfire only and you never know at some point I might want SLi.

I'll be asking here for set-up and overclocking advice next week.

I have a Swiftech adapter kit on the way and also changing my pump, not looking forward to draining the system.

Got a i7 920, asua p6t delux and 6gb of g skill, a couple of days ago.
Currently running a bclk of 200 with turbo mode enebled, giving me an oc of 4200mhz. pleased as punch.
I have managed to get this 8h prime stable (small ffts) with just 1.360 vcore wich jumps to 1.376 under load (loadline calibration?).
Would post a sceen but have no broardband at the mo im using my mobile as a dial up modem its sooooo slow!!
Just wondered what other test are worthwhile running to guaratee total stability? (blend, large ffts or a bit of occt?).
This is with with hyperthreading disabled by the way.

What VTT and CPU PLL are you using for that mate?

With HT on I suspect you'd need a bit more volts. I use Linx to test using max mem and 20 runs.

Im getting the UD5 also and i cant wait. Will be ringing home each day checking if it all has arrived.

I've managed to get my 920 to 3.85 GHz with
BCLK:192
CPU voltage : 1.35
qpi voltage: 1.35 ,
dram voltage 1.64
everything else is auto. HT on.
With a little bump in voltage I can get 4GHz using turbo step but the load temperatures go to high so I'll need to get water cooling before that.

Has anyone else noticed real temp shows a varying multiplier between 18 and 20, even with C1e off and speed step off. Is this normal ? or a sign of unstable?

sorry this is my first cpu I've overclocked

Here's mine on air

Everithing on auto except vcore and vdim

Think I've settled on my evryday overclock for mine. It's HT off, turbo on, BCLK at 195 which is 3.9 or 4.095 with Turbo activated. CPU PLL is 1.8, VTT is 1.335 and the vcore is 1.325. Hit's 70 degrees on the highest core and is prime stable for 8 hours. Think that'll do for everyday for now.
