As for battery life, that's usually one of Nintendo's strong points. The original DS probably has the worst battery life out of any of their handhelds at a "terrible" 12 hours or so of life, and the Wavebird lasts absolutely ages on a single pair of AAs. I believe the tilt sensing components are non-electrical too, so that shouldn't be draining much.
I beleive it plugs into the bottom of the Wiimote (where the nunchuck plugs in), as you say battery life for nintendo stuff tends to be very long.
I think i've only changed the batteries in my Wavebird 3 or 4 times in 3 years, and i remember the batteries in the original game boy (much higher power consumption than i can see the wiimote having) lasting 15-20 hours at a go.
