My love of electronics has led me to create this thread. This thread is basically there to help people with making and sourcing electronic items aswell as anything else relevent to this topic. I also made this thread for people to post their electronic projects however non/elebarate. Enjoy.

Nice idea for a thread. Can you recommend a soldering iron and multimeter for someone who is yet to do any diy electronics but wishes to start? Price varies wildly but I have no idea which are good enough, and which I'd just have to replace in a few months.

I re-wired a plug today.

Lol good for u.

Soldering iron just have a look around tbh. They are different to suit your needs e.g. gas, battery, mains.
You can't really buy a bad quality one as long as you go for something with a decent wattage sort of 25W plus. Mains tend to take while to heat up where as gas heats in a few seconds but u have to top it up, the battery ones are just a gimmic really they aren't any good.

As for a multimeter i don't really know i stole mine from school about £80 worth!

I almost filled my shorts replacing a light switch the other night.... My Girlfriend didnt announce the fact she was behind me and when I went to turn it on she shouts "Baaaang"

Haha i have worked on live mains before (stupid) and accidently touching a bare wire and through trying to knock it off with the other hand i touched the other one holding two lives wires with two hands! I was amazed it didn;t kill me.

I really like gas soldering irons... no lead to get in the way and you can get it really hot if you've some heavy cable to solder. I've had mine for years. I got it in a set from the company that sounds like a holiday camp. I don't think they do the same model any more, but I'm sure they'll have others.

Multimeter - I'd say you will probably be OK with just a basic digital one. I think I use mine more for the "squeak" (continuity) test than anything else. Voltage and resistance from time to time, and the other functions only occasionally. The one I use now was about £20 (I think) from B&Q.
