LOL, I actually missed the Galactic Map when I was playing. Found this video that shows the map and a hyperspace jump. It should give everyone an idea about scale :)

Just found Lave, Zaonce etc in the old world location on the Galactic Map :) I couldn't find Isinor. Zaonce to Isinor used to be a favoured trading run of mine in the original Elite.

Epic isn't it. It is simply developing into one of the most ambitious and well conceived games I have seen in a long long time. Once space is made, it's the content that is really going to get the juices flowing.

Wow, that's impressive.

A lot of space sims artificially place planets and are just a skybox of sorts, but these actually exist :O
I'm also impressed that you can supercruise across systems instead of warp so that there's actually "space" between, instead of a loading screen and more artificial borders.

Again, also impressed that when someone supercruised into the rings of a saturn like planet and it kicked him out to normal speed and there he was, in the middle of all those moonlets, it was absolutely gigantic in scale.

This is something I also hope SC gets right.

Now I want to know if they've introduced getting too close to a sun, or passing close at high speeds.
The Voyage Home anyone? :p

Really looking forward to this and recently found my old X45 in readiness. Upgrade time on CPU though (currently rocking a C2Q).

Is there any multi monitor support in this? I have PLP setup (20-30-20) so being able to use the other screens woukd be useful).

I'm very impressed with the quality and style of the visuals and sounds. Progress on this game has been astounding over the last few months, so I tend to think that Braben hasn't just been thinking about this for the last decade, he's been laying down foundations and getting things ready to go.

I'd love to know what publishers have turned him down for backing on this game in the last few years, and what reasons they gave why this kind of game "isn't viable".

Braben is like some kind of cat-stroking evil genius, sitting in a tall black chair, rubbing his hands together and laughing as his long-wrought plans for space-sim domination finally come to fruition.

Wait, wait. All of the stars that were shown in that video you can actually jump to them???

Also, my jaw dropped at the new jump sequence ..:eek:gorgeous!

Just looking better and better.

is there any sign of minimum specs yet. Am I going to have to get a new computer. Or can I just plug my laptop into my monitor.

In the final release you'll be able to head anywhere in the galactic map, fuel allowing (and probably in later beta/gamma builds). In the current build you can jump to 5 systems I think. Theoretically in the final game, you should be able to select a target system, stick the ship on supercruise and it will fly there through "real" space rather than through hyperspace. May take some time though... :P

I read on the alpha forum that supercruise can go to 1000 times light speed as long as there are no major gravity sources nearby. In reality nothing can go faster than light, so a massive gameplay concession for obvious reasons. Even in ideal circumstances, it would take about 1.6 (Earth) days to supercruise the 4.25 light years from Sol to Proxima Centauri. Something to do over a weekend :)

No wonder space games have to use hyperspace to get around the vast distances and timescales required for interstellar space travel.

It currently runs very nicely on my Q6700, couldn't say whether that will remain the case for the final game though.

Alpha requirements are at the bottom of the store page.

Yes might be a bit much to have to leave your computer running for two days between station visits.

How is multiplayer working? Im looking forward to the 30th but multiplayer is where my dream is at.

Cool thing is they've used proper galaxy mapping from telescopes/satellites. and put named planets into their correct location, and mimicked the mass of the galaxy where they're aren't star names. Little bit of tweaking here and there for follow to the earlier games and other things.

This is beginning to look like something I could get involved with. What's the best deal that will get me access now and a copy of the game? Or is beta access a better bet in a few months time?mand am I right in saying a copy of the game means I can play 'forever' without having to pay again unless I want to? No monthly/extra charges other than cosmetics/optional upgrades/ships?
