Thanks for the confirmation about MP :)

I found a youtube clip late last night showing the advantages of turning Flight Assist off. But I was too tired/fed up to try last night. The original Elite you could only roll and pitch, there seems to be a 1001 different controls now. I have a decent stick but I can't pat my head and rub my tummy so I'm struggling with all the different options. That video also told me why yaw was a waste of time and I was using that on the rudder pedals so I guess that wasn't helping.

Any chance you could link that vid please?

A quick question: How vital is a 'Hands on Throttle' unit to gameplay, would the keypad suffice?

Reason is limited bench space but if the HoT makes an equal impact as a stick does then I might look at further options.

I run the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro with a keyboard. It gets me by fine, I look at my power a lot and adjust it but it works. Won't lie though, I'm very tempted to get an x52 for this. Maybe when the multiplayer is more stable, and I can actually get in a game to try it out!

To people having problems with 3rd mission... when they get behind me I tend to bring throttle to blue area, then disable auto pilot (default c? I've remapped), face their way then engage again, and then every time they start going off my screen I do it again. Not sure if it's the most effective way, but it works. May upload a vid.

I had an old CH Pro Throttle that I used for years. I like it better because it slides back and forth instead of pivoting around at an angle. I used it for all sort of space games back in the day, and has only been retired because it's all gameport and PS2, and not supported under USB. It was terrific, and not only made the game much more enjoyable, but I was better at the games because of it.

However, when I get the new Elite, I don't see how I am going to be able to resist springing for the new version of the CH Pro Throttle. Throttle are expensive, but they make such a huge difference. It's like the difference between running in shoes, or using proper trainers for a game like Elite.

Not sure I can justify £100 to myself. The fact that the game and expansion pass costs £70 shouldn't be justification, although it does help to equate the beta access as being a £30 premium...

Last time I played elite was back on a BBC B and only about 5yrs old but was quite a social thing even at that age, me and friends would gather around and decide what to trade, where to go, etc.

Not sure why I didn't get it on the BBC A3000 - had plenty of fun on that machine with shaded polygon games like Zarch / Apocalypse / Conqueror / UIM and so on...

Thanks for the input guys. I'll have a hard think over the next week or two.

Steampunk some folk have converted their CH sticks to usb, maybe same can be done with HoT?? Someone like frooglesim over on youtube might know. Or chances are there's someone on these forums.

I doubt that's easy, and I don't want to go through something like this. I think the hardware is substantially different internally from a newer USB version. For instance, it didn't just plug into a gameport, it also had a plug to intercept the PS2 socket before it got to your keyboard (so you could program the throttle with keyboard input/macros), and a gameport on the throttle itself so you could do the same with the joystick you plugged in.

I don't even know if the thing still works as it's been years since I've had anything I could plug it into.

Anyone playing this with a Saitek X45? Would like to use this, maybe with some brd speed7 pedals for yaw...

Yep, it's been absolutely fine :D

How have you attached them to the chair?? Looks awesome

Wish I could take credit for the idea, but I've shamelessly copied another E: D backer from their forum doing the same with the Saitek x52 :D

They're VESA pole mounts clamped to the arms of the chair, and the sticks are secured to the VESA plates with high strength Velcro. They don't shift around at all, but you could quite easily screw them into place through the VESA holes. Will try and post pics later if I remember :)
