Done, didn't realise they also had some joystick/game related stuff too.

Still haven't got past the spinning ship :( Not been able to play this premium beta at all!!

Looks like its over to trying Star Citizen until it's patched.

It tends to depend on the server load, sometimes you get lucky and get put in a quiet instance and <pop> load instantly. I've had to wait at the spinning ship for 5 minutes+ before though - as ever, your usage may vary!

Indeed, but I literally never get on :( I usually let it run on average about 15 mins before quitting and retrying. I have left it longer, and I have quit quicker and tried more often too. Neither work. My connection is fine, and I have tried port forwarding etc. I got on twice saturday, and that was it. A short session too :(

I just need to wait for an update I guess.

I give up :( Just spent another hapless 2 hours and I'm dead within 30 secs everytime. I so wanted to enjoy this and I'm so rubbish.

I had the same issue, until i realised this isnt an atmospheric jet fighter simulator.

You NEED to strafe and move up and down.

You NEED to power manage between weapons, engines etc.

IE: Power to engines to close distance and get in close. Once behind or in the weapon blind spot of your target, begin manoeuvres to maintain weapon tracking (Using strafe movement/Up/Down movement and some mouse/joystick aiming) and push power to weapons for extra damage.

If taking damage put power to systems to help alleviate some stress while you conduct evasive manoeuvres.

For me, this game required some time and effort customising a lot of controls.

I use a basic joystick, a saitek cyborg evo and I use my hat switch as my power management tool. Thumb controls target locking and secondary weapon fire. right hand for pitch, roll, yaw on joystick and finer aiming.

Left hand on keyboard at WASD to control strafe Left/right and Up/down as well as keyboard based throttle, afterburner, lower power mode and other such misc functions.

Take some time with the controls get them comfortable, practice in combat and stop flying like you're in an F 18 jet. this is space, you can rotate while maintaining your vector, keep that in mind and USE that ability.

Good hunting dude!

Running nicely at full graphical settings on my 7850 at 1920x1080. I've actually got crossfire, but I'm fairly sure it's only using one card.

Runs extremely well although it kept wanting to Crossfire by default which gives terrible Graphical glitches and CTD so just create a Elite profile disabling Crossfire in AMD catalyst software. Also windowed mode gives far less CTD.

After playing Star Citizen this game is far superior in flight this is a Sim and not a Arcade game.

What are the best information resources for this? Got it in a whim a few days ago and I'm loving it but as such I'm not in tune with anything. Ships gear classes stats etc.

I understand it's a beta but I'd like to know exactly how far I can go. Lots of people saying get 2nd laser then grind for MKIII cobra. Fair enough but ive no idea what comes next or what benefits the cobra offers. Basically want to do some serious reading and get clued up, if anyone can point me in the right direction that would be grand

OK heres some notes for new guys.

How to get started
  • In the starting system, head to Eranin 3 or eranin 6 low intensity conflict zones.
  • Using the right hand ship panel (3 by default) select erenin as your faction.
  • Don't just charge in, pick your fights, you don't want to be close to the dreadnaught for very long at this stage and you certainly don't want to be in the middle of a new enemy NPC spawn as you will quickly get blown up...
  • Pick of the smallest fighters from range - 2.5 to 1.5km - they die very quickly.
  • Then go for the Cobra's - get in behind them very close before engaging - you can out turn them so make the most of it. Dont let them get range on you, sling pips in engines and boost to keep up with them and if they get more than 3km away move away
  • Eagles are a lot more tricky as they can out turn you, if you are in a turning battle at close range with an eagle, disengage flight assist to get them in your sights (takes a little practice though)
  • Avoid the anacondas at this stage they will mince you up.
  • Run away if you have more than one ship firing on you (flashing red/white on the scanner)
  • Don't go and pay for repairs, FIGHT TO THE DEATH! New sidewinders are free at least until you get your first weapons upgrade.
  • Once you have killed 5 ships, head back to the station and buy another Pulse Laser.
  • Now you are getting there. Get out there and rinse and repeat until you have 16k credits.
  • Hyperspace to The high tech system, dock and buy two gimbled pulse lasers.
  • Now you are a killing machine.
  • Dont rush to Cobra - unless you want to start trading, the Eagle is great fun. Plus trading is a bit broken at the moment, combat is where its at.
  • Once you are kitted up with an eagle, go and find some bounties in the extraction site in the anarchy system, but watch out for other players!

Regarding Power Management
  • Pips in any area do not better that area except for engines - it just increases the charge rate of the capacitor for that system (the notched bars above).
  • i.e. Pips in engines improves your top speed and increases the charge rate so you can use boost more often BUT
  • pips in weapons only improves the cooling of your weapons not the power - and faster cooling means you can fire for longer before overheating
  • pips in systems does not improve shield strength, it just boosts the capacitor which in turn powers the shield recharge- if the capacitor is empty your shields will not recharge at all, if it is full they will recharge at the normal recharge rate until the capacitor is empty. Manage your systems capacitor so you never have to worry for example, when you are not engaged or chasing someone down, go to systems to recharge the capacitor. If you have to run under fire, do not throw pips into systems when your shield are down as it wont help, put them all in engines fopr speed and the rest in systems to charge the capacitor.

Therefore when you are fighting in the initial stages in the sidewinder, keep 4 pips in weapons and 2 in engines. Transfer the pips from weapons to engines to catch up a "runner" or close distance then sling them all back into weapoins to cool them faster (therefore shoot for longer). Only use systems pips when you do not have any more bars in the systems capacitor.

Oh and finally don't rush. This is beta and lots and lots of stuff is missing from the game. Rush to cobra and you will quickly run out of things to do, at least until we got more systems and the market is not so sensitive. If you are finding the constant fighting to be a grind, go out and explore - there are some beautiful places to see in these 5 systems, go look for them, you may just stumble on something useful...

Hope that helps.

One note to the above post is if you buy an eagle and then wish to test or use the cobra or any other ship, when you come to sell the eagle for instance, you will not get any credits back for the ship you paid 40,000 odd credits for and so it becomes worthless in terms of upgrading to a new ship at this stage of development. Also from what i have seen the hull of the eagle is a little fragile so be mindful of your radar at all times and know when to run and escape.
This will no doubt change in time but presently i would get to the second pulse laser in the sidewinder and then kill npcs in the low/high intensity areas until you have amassed enough credits for the cobra and some insurance monies which will put you needing around the 125,000 credits mark.
Trading in the sidewinder can be done but its painstakingly slow and due to small system for trading in, not so fruitful right now.

This is just my opinion and others will play their way that's what makes the game interesting, make your own destiny.

There is some great sites out there to see even in this current system and at this early stage of development, have a ride around and enjoy.

Some great tips there. I just wish the game wouldn't crash so often ( for me at least ). That's really curtailing my enjoyment of the premium beta. Such a pity, because the game looks so good even at this early stage.

I've been watching this on Twitch. It's probably the first game in years that I've wanted a PC for. :D

I've not seen anyone with enough credits to buy a gimballed weapon - how do they actually work in the game?

In addition to the above tips - once you've fitted two gimballed pulse lasers, head to the federation distress call instead. There are SO many fighters which you can blast down insanely fast and credits roll in. I went from 10k->60k just now.

There is also very little risk here, except from other people joining the federation ( I got 1 shot by a cobra earlier). The two dreadnoughts seem to be rendered inoperable all the time and the federation fighters don't even seem to notice you!

They do work and i used them for a while on my Eagle, but quite honestly they make the game soooo easy that I've removed them and stuck the fixed pulse lasers back on with a gimballed multi-cannon.

Just don't get the beam lasers as they are bugged and only cause damage when they can be bothered to.

No, I was wondering HOW they worked. Obviously with the pulse lasers, you have to have your target in your sights as they only fire in a straight line. But does having a gimballed weapon mean you can just hold down the fire button and they will autotarget your enemy and fire at them even if you can't see them on screen?
