What advantage? You keep saying it like it's fact but I've been a backer on both games since early days and honestly can't see any.

If you buy SC retail the only things you won't be able to get are:

1. Life time insurance - which frankly is likely to be worthless and has been permanently withdrawn for everyone from now on. So it's only on certain ships and only covers the hull - not any upgrades added later. The value of this is extremely debatable but it offers no performance/combat advantage and you can't simply spam a new ship out.

2. A golden ticket which right now is allegedly going to be something cosmetic anyway and only covers the first 10,000 people who registered interest in the game (i.e. registered on a website - no cash involved).

So where's this advantage you speak of?

They're releasing more ships as it brings in funds, news flash - it's a business. Do you think E : D charging £200+ to take part in an alpha is OK but charging for an in-game item for a game that's about to hit alpha isn't? I really don't see what the problem is. This is adults spending their cash to back game development which others can then benefit from and which keeps it out of the hands of publishers.

I don't want to derail the E : D thread, I'm a backer of it and actually more excited about it than SC at the moment.

How about we see some gameplay huh for all the money that people are spending. All i seen was running around a lousy Hanger...zzZZzz.

Gave the latest alpha a whirl earlier. A lot more stable, didn't crash once, but I did have an issue with the scenarios not starting most of the time.

Graphics are also much improved and also runs at 2560x1600 without any corruption. Enemy AI has also been improved (or at least made tougher).

Looking forward to giving docking a go when the next alpha phase goes live later in the month.

Given there is no view other than forwards, will be interesting to see how difficult/techinical landing on a pad is :)

There is obviously a docking HUD display, so maybe that makes it easy :)

This months PC Gamer was waiting for me when I got home and has a feature on ED, specifically using the Oculus Rift.

The writers were VERY impressed with the combat demo and the rift and impression given was that it will be one hell of a gaming experience.

One thing I did think off, is there plenty of stations with out simulated gravity?

As that's going to be impossible to dock with if you are heavily damaged.

Alpha 3.0 is out!

Yes, there's something about the ED art direction - it kind of looks like Tron 2. It's really pretty all over.

I watched that video and at the end I found myself smiling for no apparent reason. It's also funny that they've done it as a training movie for Federation docking, kind of like the Star Citizen ads for the ships, or even a bit Hitchhikers Guide: "Follow Federal protocol to avoid ship destruction."

There's an issue at the moment with the multiplayer portion that also contains the docking. I think its quite hit and miss as to whether you get in. Hopefully there will be a fix coming sometime soon.

So many beautiful memories from my youth playing Elite. I'm a backer of Star Citizen and have pledged a small amount of money, but this game is looking really nice competition for it, and vice versa.

Is this going to drop this year? before Star Citizen?

The schedule is loose and changeable, but it's likely to be this year. I'd expect them to be in beta by the end of April.

I'm guessing they both will be trying to beat each other to launch..Hope both titles don't make the mistake of focusing their efforts on getting to the shelves first
