*** The Official Halo 4 Thread ***

3 multiplayer map packs have been announced (whoch will no doubt segregate the community over time).

AFAIK there is no single player/ campaign DLC announced?

I'm undecided. I didn't really dig Halo 2 + 3, something about them just bored me. However I rate Halo and Reach as two really fantastic single player games. The problem is, since it's a Halo game, it will nearly certainly recieve rave reviews. How will I be able to tell if it's a Halo/Reach or a 2/3? D:

Couldn't give a flying monkies about the multiplayer though!

My problem is same but for the exact opposite reasons, I played a little of two however 3 I played for a stupid amount of time (days online was 20 something IIRC) however I couldn't get on with Reach and really didn't play it all the much. I did wonder whether this was due to me getting used to COD in between playing 3 and reach but I went back to 3 and still enjoyed it. So for me how do I figure out if it is a Halo 3 or a Halo Reach.

While I do play the single player, Halo has always been like COD for me in the respect. Knock out the SP then play the multiplayer a ton, so I could deal with a lacking story as long as multiplayer is enjoyable.

I love all the Halo games, but for me Reach has to be the worst by a mile, which is a shame with it being Bungies last Halo game. The features were amazing like the forge improvements and forge world itself, but too many stupid little things ruined a half decent game.

I miss the days of playing Big Team Battle on fantastic maps like Head long, Waterworks, Terminal and Burial mounds :( It's just a shame that internet connections back then were god awful so it was always laggy as hell.

Ah they were the days, halo2 8v8 CTF on those maps were great, bring back waterworks! Best map ever!

I miss playing BTB without all the power ups/ no overpowered vehicles like the banshee. It was a level playing field with everyone having BRs.

Favourite map has to be lockout or midship (and no blackout/ zealot are nothing like them!)

That was half the fun on Waterworks though, Banshee's and Wraiths going at each other at both bases, using the Wraith to block off the back door with the green boxes, the sniper battles that happened between the middle of the map and the bases and so on.

It's just a shame that the Halo 3/Reach maps haven't been anywhere near as good as those Original Halo 2 maps (even the DLC Halo 2 maps were pretty good as well).

this has given the PS3 developed games a lot more room to push for eye candy.
Nice, when are they releasing some of those games?:p

As Bungie opted for 4 player splitscreen it limited what they could do with the graphics to an extent.
Only in split screen itself, single screen play will be unaffected. At least this is the way it has worked before.

I thought Reach was the best Halo game so far. What kind of stupid little things are we talking.

-Certain stupid armor powers that slow down the pace of an already slow paced game i.e Armor lock and active camo (the rest were fine).

-The fact that the game still tracks every single betrayal I've ever done in previous games, which means if I accidentally kill one person they get the option to boot me straight from the game and of course they do with it being Xbox Live. The first week of the game being out I was in a Banshee boosting away from a fight while in mid air, one of my "team" spawned on top of the Banshee while I was running away to get my shields back and he gets splattered and there was **** all I could do about it, of course I was booted straight out of the game for something I had no control over, this wasn't an isolated incident either.

-I was playing one sided CTF on the attacking side and it was such a ball ache getting the flag back to our base because the enemy were just literally spawning on top of each other at my own base, yet we were spawning half way across the bloody map

-The reticle bloom was the single worst addition to the game, since it added a random factor to the combat where someone could spam the trigger on the DMR and get a lucky kill on someone who was actually aiming and timing their shots. It also made longer range DMR battles pretty much pointless, an example being that on Halo 2 & 3 I could kill someone half way across Coagulation/Valhalla with a BR quite easily, but in Reach on the Bloodgulch forge remake (I forget its name) I was struggling to kill people in Team SWAT with 3-4 DMR bullets to their heads at the midpoint of the map from my base, yet in Halo 2 & 3 I would make that shot 9/10 times.

-Then we get on to the maps being the biggest fail of any halo game with them being ripped straight from the campaign. I'm aware they were made this way purposely to be used in both SP & MP, but as a result they ended up being some of the most boring and terrible maps that I've ever played in a Halo game. The only thing that saved the game were the forge recreations, but again those were fantastic maps from Halo 2 (& 3?) so they don't count :p

-The health system returning was a stupid idea as well since it again slowed down the pace of the game, I had to pretty much run back and find a health pack after every single fight, I mean am I playing in 2010 or 1995?. All I can say is thank **** that 343 has realised this and returned it to how it was in Halo 2 & 3.

-The majority of new weapons were crap as well especially since the ones they replaced were vastly superior, BR > DMR, beam rifle > focus rifle, brute shot > concussion rifle, I will say I did like the needle rifle even though I did miss the carbine.

-------------

Enough for you? :p 343 seem to have addressed most of my problems with Reach and improved upon Halo in general (e.g being able to join mid game so you're not permanently a man down if someone quits) so I'm actually looking forward to Halo 4 :) Where as if it would have been Reach 2.0 I would have avoided it like the plague.

Only in split screen itself, single screen play will be unaffected. At least this is the way it has worked before.

Games better looking than Halo 3 and Reach? Uncharted, God of War 3. Gears of War, Killzone 2-3, Final Fantasy XIII, Motorstorm, Alan Wake the list goes on. Not just PS3 games mind, i reiterate for the third time, i was drawing on the fact that barely any PS3 games support split screen, let alone 4 player, not that the PS3 is superior in any way.

Single player in Halo 3/Reach runs at a higher resolution and i believe with extra AA/AF but that's it. The models etc have to be designed with the fact that they could potentially need to be rendered four times in parallel if 4 player split screen is enabled kept in mind. As a result of this poly count, textures etc. will always suffer unless two of each asset are created (eg low resolution/detail textures/low poly models for split screen, high for single player, afaik this does not happen)

I don't know of many games that transitioned to no split screen to having split screen on the 360 so i'm going to have to draw another PS3 comparison in. I must point out before people jump on the mention of a PS3 that this is purely because i do not know of any 360 examples:

Look at the transition between Killzone 2 and 3 and the transition between Uncharted 1-3. Killzone 3 saw no noticeable improvement in graphical prowess over its predecessor. Uncharted has seen a massive leap between 1 and 2 and no large improvement in 3. Killzone 3 supported split screen coop, Killzone 2 didn't. Coop was implemented as 3D was a feature, meaning the PS3 would have to potentially render the same image twice in single player. GG had to squeeze a bit more capability out of the hardware, not uncommon in sequels, but no graphical improvement was seen as all the extra headroom was set aside for 3D/Splitscreen. Uncharted 3 is the same bag, 3D was implemented, none of the headroom gained from coding efficiency improvements was utilized for graphical improvement as we saw in Uncharted 1-2 as it was set aside for rendering 3D if it was needed.

I wish i knew more about computing terminology etc to be able to make this a more robust argument but it simply goes, rendering in splitscreen takes more hardware capability. Yes running in single player gives that headroom back, but textures, poly count etc is always held back unless two of each asset is made (which, afaik, they aren't), one for single player, one for split screen. The only thing that *generally* changes is resolution, AA, AF and framerate. These will bolster the graphics above that seen in multiplayer, but it still holds the graphical capabilities of the title back overall.

Was considering cancelling the limited edition and going for the standard - that was until I realised Tesco have charged me already! Its the only seller Ive known to ever charge a preorder before despatch. Cheeky beggars!

Better get my damn Raptor armour, which was the only reason for going via Tesco. Paid top price at £64.97 too!

I guess we just have different visions on what Halo should be, for me none of those things were a problem. Things like the old health system coming back and the new weapons I thought were good :P

I was mainly talking about campaign though as compared to the other halos I didn't put in as much multiplayer time.

Sorry I was mainly overreacting to the word 'far' :) Sure some games do look better but between the likes of Halo Reach and other games of the time there is really not a lot of movement imo

Have you got any sources for that info? I'm really thinking that diminishing returns are playing a bigger part.

Also, this thread is really quiet. Are people not excited about this? I am looking forward to it and this is coming from someone who has barely switched on his xbox and ps3 in months.

I've just cancelled the Limited Edition and gone for the standard. It was £32.87 versus £64.97 - I may as well just buy the map packs as and when they come out, not to mention that I may not even like the game yet as I wouldnt say I've played much of Reach, primarily as I always get my arse kicked compared to other FPS games.

I've watched a few vids on the class system, all of which explain the various "perks" you can pick. What no video has shown though, is what primary/secondary weapons can be selected to start with. Presumably you won't be able to start a round with the upper tier weapons such as light rifles or rocket launchers? Are we may be looking at just a small selection to choose from such as shotgun, battle rifle etc?
