*** The official HTC One S thread ***

If the M7 comes with a lot of internal storage 64GB or/and SD slot then I can see the device being very popular at XDA. It is the main thing that that lot over there hate.

But yeah I wish it was a lot easier to root etc. HTC devices :(

Oh yes definitely, they might even take a cue from the X+ which had a massive 64GB of memory.

HTC need to have a meeting in their offices and discuss strategy to stop Apple and Samsung dominating the market! :D

That includes opening up to Devs and making their devices easy to tinker with.

I still stand by my point as to why htc aren't more popular etc. marketing and advertising and not having a proper brand name and then saturating the market with too many devices. It is just awful, you see all these ads for samsung and apple devices but hardly anything for htc devices and when you do it is usually a crappy ad :( I bet that if they improved their marketing to apple/samsung's levels and didn't have all these different models, the one series would have been a heck of a lot more popular. Shame as the one series phones were very good and this time actually held their ground against the galaxy unlike the sensation vs galaxy s2 :o

Yes I'm with you there. HTC lag behind in several areas which will no doubt damage their sales. Remember way back when Peter Chou stated that HTC released too many devices in a certain year and consumers got confused?

They haven't learnt have they? For example only last year they released the following (takes a deep breath!!):

Desire U
Butterfly
Droid DNA
One SV CDMA
One SV
Desire SV
One VX
One X+
One X
One ST
One SU
One SC
Desire X
Desire VT
Desire VC
Desire V

Granted some of the phones above are for different global markets and carriers but I really do not have a clue what any of the phones are about except for the most obvious.

The Sensation vs GS2 was a total slaughter in favour of Samsung. However the One series actually held its own, bar for a couple of things which HTC nearly always get wrong, i.e. battery life :o

Indeed! Complete joke their naming/releasing scheme, sony is just as bad with all the letters of the alphabet :p :o. Need to stop it right now if they want to do well (HTC CEO said that they will at the time of release for the butterfly but I doubt that very much since they said the same before the one series and already have 3 versions of the their current flagship already ), granted Samsung release a ton of devices too, however, they are all very different and don't actually compete with the original flagship and plus they don't market them at all so no one really knows about them :p

Yup If they hadn't bothered with the X due to the stupid "quad core" marketing term and being first and instead just released the one XL as their flagship here (and included SD slot), then it would have done much better and been more popular on these forums etc., battery life on it is very good, better than the one S and GS 3 going by opinions on XDA, people can get up to 6 hours on screen time spread across 1-2 days

Looks like HTC have a real killer this time with the M7 in every single area, unfortunately though I bet their marketing will still be crap, they'll release another improved version in 4-6 months time. Even if the GS 4 wasn't as good, people will still buy it over the M7 due to the hype machine of Samsung and their superb marketing skills :( Plus there seem to be a lot of HTC haters that will always find a reason to not buy a htc device :(

Both Sony and HTC's marketing department need a kick up the backside. I get a headache just trying to keep up with their releases. On OCUK we have a higher level of interest in phones then the general public and we get confused, imagine how they feel!

Samsung do release lots of devices too, but they are all under the Galaxy moniker and rest assured they would not release a Galaxy S4 + within the second half of the year but I'm pretty much sure that HTC will release an updated version of the M7 just like they did with the Sensation and One X, which would have peed off a fair few customers.

Samsung have one up on HTC and are onto a winner when it comes to the Galaxy range. I've never seen so many people with Galaxy S3's walking around, which goes to show that Samsung have hit the nail on the head when it comes to getting into people's psyche.

Even a Mate of mine who is a hardcore Apple fan is thinking of swapping his iphone for a S3 when it comes to his upgrade.

No one else would consider even looking at HTC or Sony.

I need a change from Samsung's plastic build quality....(as well as other phones) I've come from the original Galaxy S to the S2 and finally the S3 and would just like a change when it comes to build quality and design.

Yeah that is another thing, I can't stand it when everyone has the same phone, annoys me so much! :p :o

Galaxy device here, there, everywhere, apple device here, there, everywhere.........

Back in the day before "smartphones", everyone had the sony Ericsson devices and was why I switched to the lovely Samsung Soul (u9000) in the end, no one had one! Was such an awesome device and looked superb

Yup, unfortunately if you want a nice looking and premium android device, your only choices are htc and then Sony, although I have always hated sony's design, but since the V, they look much better now, especially the Z and ZL (not keen on the back of the Z though)

Samsung can make nice looking devices as proved by their older phones and the windows phones but for some reason they don't want to for android handsets

The one S really is the best when it comes to design and build/perceived quality so far for android devices imo.

Yes the Galaxy range has become like the iphone, either you have an iphone or Galaxy not anything else. It's good to be different and stand out from the crowd, that's why you have to look further a field and get a decent phone that no one else would think of getting.

The Ativ S is a gorgeous looking phone but like you pointed out why on earth don't Samsung carry their designs forward when it comes to Android phone?

Wow, that's taking me back the Samsung Seoul, wasn't that the phone with touch navigation and a slider? A more classy G500?

Think we'll have to look further a field if we want something different...possibly the Oppo Finder 5? :D

Yup, and in the last year or so, it is no longer android VS apple (i.e. news articles etc.) but galaxy XX VS iphone as if to say that the gs 3 is the only android device :p

Love the design of the ATIV s and the thing is you would think that it was aluminium, but........it's not! Why on earth do Samsung go with a cheap looking glossy brushed plastic (imo) when they could use that instead?!?!

Yeah pretty much, the Samsung "soul" (:p) U900 (thought it had an extra 0 :o :p), this here:

Camera on it is still really good for today's standards (year it was taken = 2008):

The oppo 5 actually looks really good! On the whole the device does look excellent. They are definitely a company to keep an eye on in the future. If this does well I can see them making their way up the android manufacturer hierarchy VERY quickly.

Battery life is pretty good according to gsmarena:

Shame that they probably have non existent support though :p :(

Wow, that's an awesome picture from a phone that is fairly old. If you didn't say I would've thought that it was taken with your HOS.

Brilliant picture by the way! Just check out the claws, he's chilling out isn't he?!

It's the way that Samsung have marketed their devices, they've come out of nowhere and Apple saw them as a threat hence the multiple and endless lawsuits. No other company stands a chance when it comes to selling their devices on a volume per volume basis. So it is basically Samsung and Android and no other device - which is a shame really on one hand but really great on the other (as the amount of time and effort) Samsung have put into their Galaxy range has been nothing short of spectacular.

The Oppo Finder (I chuckle to myself) everytime I hear or read that name is a good phone but it will have non existant support as the company has very little in the way of a decent track record and they have come from nowhere kind of like Hauwei and ZTE.

Just been looking through most of the photos taken with that phone and damn they are actually really good! Especially indoor lowish lit shots, very little "noise" to them.

Another one:

YUKM2cS.jpg

haha yeah, that is her favourite spot, in the lounge behind the armchair with a big window so she can look out and then has the sunshine there for most of the day. The claws are extremely sharp (sharpens them by scratching the furniture  :p).

Yup and Apple only have themselves to blame as well, since all their stupid court cases only brought a lot more media attention to both them and Samsung and in the end....... it benefited Samsung a lot more than it did for apple :D I believe that is why they also did extremely well with the GS 3, the average consumers were then aware of the galaxy range and would have then taken a keen interest to looking at them thus liking android and then buying the device.

It is a bit of a weird name :D

Hopefully they can/will proof themselves in the support area, doubt it though :( Will be keeping a close eye on what happens with the oppo 5. The device certainly has generated a lot more interest than ZTE and Hauwei devices though. Killer specs and a superb screen for a decent enough price.

It just goes to show that Samsung have produced quality phones in terms of photography even way back then!

Another great picture there! She must damage the furniture, you must invest in a scratching post!

I wholeheartedly agree with you in regards to Apple giving Samsung adverse exposure to the public, it backfired on them BIG-TIME! It brought Samsung to the forefront of consumers minds, (what is this phone / company that our beloved Apple are scared of?)

Sony had to differentiate their product from the flagships of 2013 and the only way they could do it was by water proofing and dust proofing the Xperia Z. I'm sure that other manufacturers will follow suit no doubt. We will have to wait and see when it comes to the Oppo 5, the smartphone market is definitely getting crowded and more competitive which can ultimately benefit the consumer in the long run.

We already have invested in a scratching post etc. but hasn't touched them :( :p Same goes for toys, bought loads, but doesn't bother with them! TC is quite good though, will happily play with anything and does use the catnip scratch mat every now and then (but he is a outdoor cat so would sharpen his nails by scratching the bark)

Yup, will be an interesting year, Samsung will have to have something very unique to set them apart from Sony and especially HTC's flagship this time, saying that, even if they don't they'll still end up selling a lot more devices than both :p curious as to what will be the next "big" thing for smartphones, hoping battery life improvements will be the next big leap forward i.e. where phones will last at least 3-4 days with ease.

Protection

Hey Folks,

Had the HOS for 6 months now and loving it. Can I have recommendations for a screen protector and a case.

I have an awful screen protector at the moment that feels like I'm looking through tracing paper. I also have a cheap, s-line, gel case which is great at protecting the phone but its very difficult to press the buttons and hides the phones sexiness I have a tendency for dropping my phone so protection is a priority but a nicer feeling case would be nice.

Screen protector wise, I was impressed with the HTC screen protectors (probably better ones on amazon now though):

Case wise, for all round protection, the diztronic TPU matte case:

If you want some more protection and a nice feeling/looking case and don't mind a bit extra bulk then the case mate tough:

I love the rock quicksand case, however, it doesn't add as much protection as the other two:

She sounds quite fussy! :p

TC is a legend though, quite a character! At least he uses all that is at his disposal and the outdoor elements too!

Indeed Samsung will need to up the stakes and come out with something very special, they won't need any help though as their marketing department will take care of that. Samsung will no doubt add some goodies to Touchwiz that will set their phones apart from the competition, even though the phone will be made of the same plastic construction as their design department have little imagination :p

There's talk of touchless gestures coming to the S4 which were first used in the Xperia Sola, now that would be different as you pointed out in the S4 thread

I'm also curious too as to what will be the next big thing in mobile tech, improved battery life would be a god send though! :)

Same, going to update soon. Although not that it matters much anyway as I don't use the sense keyboard at all :p

@stoosh

She most certainly is, especially when it comes to food!

Regarding Samsung dominating the market and their marketing, another reason why they are doing so well is because when you go to the phone shops, the galaxy and note phones have their wee own stand (some even have a big TV purely to show the phone of.......)just like the iphones, where as all the other phones by htc, sony etc. are bunched together :p  Brainwash at its best! :D :p

Yup that feature would be very very cool, however, supposedly it takes a lot of power up on the sony phones, apparently Samsung have made it much more power efficient though.

On a side note:

Had a proper play with the nexus 4 and it is very nice, love the feel of the glass screen. I personally found the screen pretty good! Colours didn't seem washed out and the viewing angles were very good. Very fast and smooth throughout and the stock android theme is so good! (has really made me want to put CM or PA etc. on now), looks lovely too, doesn't feel as good as the one S in terms of build, perceived quality and not as comfortable in one hand, but a lot better than the GS 3 etc. imo.

The Nexus 4 viewing angles are fine side to side. But look at it diagonally (like when it's sat on the side of your desk) the gray haze kicks in. Something that the ip4/5 doesn't do.
