*** The official HTC One S thread ***

Ah, I thought you musta got banned for spoiling a Dons tv viewing experience or something, no excuse for spoilers:D

Me.......banned!?!?!

NEVER! :D :p

Some great pics there Nexus.

Thanks :)

I find the HOS camera software does over sharpen somewhat and the other thing I noticed with mine is that it struggles with white balance, more so when reds and greens are involved. I maybe need to check the default settings a little more though did fiddle with white balance with limited success. For what it is it isn't bad really. Of course it'll never replace my Nikon DSLR but is handy for the times you're caught without a camera. The speed of the phone camera is quite something but personally find it not easy to use without a dedicated shutter button on the phone itself.

Yeah the white balance is my only complaint with the camera/photos, in some shots it can be fine and in others it is just too white/bright as you can see in a couple of those photos when in Rome with the sky.

If you manually adjust the ISO, it helps I find.

Only other thing, which I would like to improve regarding the camera is the light metering and for the jerkiness to be gone when recording 1080P

Hope you had a good trip Nexus.

It was great apart one day of sea sickness  (thankfully it was all day at sea that day :p, so didn't miss any of the day trips), thanks :)

Did wonder if you had gone over to the dark side .... Apple

:p

As I've said earlier I dumped the Case-Mate. Hot weather seemed to make the rubbery outer shell even worse for getting phone in and out of pocket. Also heat seemed to make the edges of the inner protection layer start to go 'soft' around the edges and start to stretch.

I bought an OtterBox Commuter from the US. I think they will be available over here in the UK around middle of this month. Fits very well. Makes the phone feel slimmer than the Case Mate tough though don't think there is a lot in it. The outer shell is more plastic than rubber and is slicker getting in and out of your pocket. The corners are the exposed inner protection layer which is rubbery and adds just enough friction when handling the phone to lessen chances of slipping from hand. There are holes for both mikes and little flaps to cover both ports on the phone. They're a good compomise and keep pocket dust out the respective ports. Being in a manual job it is ideal for me.

Can't say I have noticed that with mine yet........

Personally I don't like that case :p The design isn't my cup of tea and I cba with the flaps for the ports, too much faff for me :p

I love the tough case, but when I take it off every now and then to clean it and the mobile, I just really miss the minimal design of the 1s and the thin bezel, the screen just feels like it pops out more.

Looking at the nillkin case, case mate barely there, Qubits Hybrid Rubberised or the Diztronic case (seems to be very popular over at XDA), which offers protection around the bottom and top.

Well the bevelled USB port is great but the top edge doesn't look much different on those comparisons.

Yeah, I can't see much difference for the edges, they should have used 2 grey models instead.

I've worked out how to stop mine chipping anyway. Put it in my pocket bottom end first and it hasnt picked up a single new chip so far. My only worry is having to flip it in my hands each time i take it out/put it in my pocket means i will almost certainly drop it at some point :(

I'm thinking of chopping my One X in and getting one of these instead, am I nuts?

Depends what exactly it is that you don't like about the X?

Main advantages X has over S is:

- screen
- more internal storage
- NFC

Although you may prefer the vibrant colours and pitch blacks of SAMOLED over the IPS and therefore might make up for the loss of 720P.....

Main advantages S has over X is:

- far better battery life
- better processor in terms of power efficiency and pure power
- IMO better design/looks and feel
- Slightly quicker and just feels more "snappy" (however, the X may be the same now after all the updates it has received to improve that area, haven't used one months now so can't comment)

If you aren't bothered about the size then the GS 3 is probably the wiser decision as you get to keep the 720P res (and the screen is truly stunning) along with super smooth and quick operation as well, that is if you can get past the ugly looks/design :p (IMO) and from what I have seen and heard so far, average battery life, which doesn't seem much better than the X (still a bit too early to tell though).....

Friend of mine who has the GS 3 said the battery life isn't great:

That is with 60% screen brightness, a fair bit of syncing emails (hotmail every 30 minutes), bit of youtube, few texts, not many calls, bit of a movie, bit of browsing, fair amount of whatsapp and power saver mode turned on. Screen apparently was on for about 2 hours 47 minutes.

I generally love the X, I'm just finding it a touch cumbersome the odd time.

Probably :D

I did think of selling my One S and buying an X but the S has grown on me. Signal in my locale was marginal at best on my One S but since update it only loses signal very occasionally now. It's the phone at fault as Three's signal is strong. I can walk 25yards and with LOS on the mast signal jumps to a full set of bars. All this is checked with Network Signal app. Don't know why the S does this when my old Motorola has no problems. But like I say it has improved slightly which is just enough to keep me happy. Other than that I find it a good phone. Battery life is great. Phone feels solid too though may be let down with the chipping issue which on the face of it is only cosmetic - still should not happen. Both good phones though you may consider the new samsung as has been mentioned. Only you can decide. Ask the same question at the One X forum and they will think you are nuts :D:D

Best thing to do is go and try the S out and see how you get on with the size and screen :)

You aren't the only person to have considered this, loads of people have gone from the X to the S for that exact reason.

Might not look like a lot of difference when you see pics etc. comparing the size but in real life it is noticeable.

Also give the GS 3 ago as despite it being slightly larger than the X, it felt nice to hold in the hand and not as big as you would think....

If it's just a 'touch' cumbersome then no, it's not worth changing it.

If you were really struggling then fair enough, but it's easy enough to handle unless you've got small hands. That occasional minor inconvenience is entirely worth it for the screen.

I was about to say try the S3 as it's slightly narrower than the One X (it looks it), but it's actually wider...

Yeah, with the S3 being slightly bigger it's a complete no no for me. I find the One X a bit of a pain after a few shandies and I'm in my tightish fitting jeans. It's almost like carrying a house brick with you.

WOW!

Sorry forgot to post tasks. But this was daily use. Texted, a few pic messages, playing little empire, web browsing, using flipboard and xda. The screen is pretty dim as I use my phone indoors most of the time anyway. Using trickdroid tmous 3.0 with tweaks.

I unlocked bootloader and rooted the day I got it. Used trickdroids and ledroids Roms so far. My gf is using blackdragon 5.0. All three are very excellent as far as stability and DD use. Trickdroid seems to be giving me the best battery life regardless of the placebo affect

I'm positive it will last that long or longer as I had my screen on all day. If I turned it off it would go much further. You may get similar results with leaving it on 50% and letting it sleep periodically. I posted a screen in torxx's EU trickdroid rom with a day and 6 hrs use. That was a normal work day. 13 hr shift and 3 one hr breaks in-between those 13 hrs.

Its tmous U.S. The "H" network or 3.5 "4g" or whatever they want to call it. I did leave it on and sit just to test out the batt and current set up I'm using. I used the phone when I needed to. No vids just textes (between 30-50 normal use), pic messages, web browsing, flipboard, gaming buzz widget, and I hotspotted for like 15 mins to download some apps to my hd2 from the marketplace. No calls either, but then again who uses their for phone for phone calls :D

Find that very hard to believe though (unless he has the screen set to 0% brightness constantly amongst tweaks to the CPU voltages etc. and a black layout throughout the entire system or something along those lines :p), but IF that is true then that is just simply outstanding, may have to root and flash Trickdroid ROM now.......... :D :p

Each to their own as they say regards the CaseMate :D
Anyway, I rooted my phone the other day. Long story short I use my phone for alarm clock and clock at night. I use Gentle Alarm and with the 'night display' on the blooming button lights would blaze away all night. I did find if you covered the light sensor then turned the screen off and back on the button lights would stay off as long as you didn't touuch the phone. A right faff. So rooted my One S, installed Tasker from the Play Store then imported the 'task' from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612964&page=2 (post #15). Now have a shortcut to toggle the lights off or on which does the trick :p

Now I've started I want to do something about the 3 dot menu at the bottom of the screen with none ICS apps. Thinking about giving the TrickDroid ROM a go? Should I shouldn't I

OT - I wonder if we'll miss NFC at all on our One S's for paying for goods in the not to distant future? I notice Barclaycard have come up with Paytag. Simply a sticker that sticks to the back of your phone. No doubt others may follow? Best not lose you phone! I didn't consider NFC as anything of use to me when buying a One S though realize there are other uses for it .

Indeed! :D

Could just be a problem with the app maybe? Kaloer seems to be very popular here and looks great on AMOLED screens :)

I just use the stock sense app for alarms though.

Have seen a tweak on XDA to get rid of the 3 button menu on the button and the menu is brought up when you hold the multitasking button or just replaces multitasking button completely and therefore you have to hold the home button down for the multitasking window or something similar.

Seems to be implemented in most of the ROMs as well.

Entirely up to you, main things, which will/should improve is battery life, speed and smoothness (not that the S is slow to begin with on stock anyway :p), more free RAM, more additional tweaks like switches for wifi etc. in the notification bar, screen auto brightness adjustments, stock ICS theme etc.

Can't comment on which ROM is the best as I haven't read about any of them into detail apart from a quick glance at the changes etc.

Although stick to the sense V4 based ROMs otherwise you will loose the great sense V4 features/apps, which can't be replicated to the same standard on any other phone brand or via 3rd party apps, such as the camera, gallery, phone dialer, lock screen etc. (IMO)

I personally won't for any of the uses. It will still be quite a while till it becomes an everyday thing for paying for items etc. via that method and by that time, we all will have the latest mobiles anyway :p If the iphone 5 has it (most likely will) and apple market the feature extremely well like they do for all their products/features then things could take off a bit quicker

Sending files to a mobile by touching them together, carrying certain tasks out by placing on a tag also means very little to me as well, especially as you can carry those tasks out by other methods, which are just as quick and in some cases quicker and better anyway.

It would have been nice to have had it anyway especially as all the phones that are being released nowadays have it.
