) I would say that they aren't much, if any bigger than last years bezels, in fact I would say they are more or less the same as the S/X.
Compared to the GS 4, the side bezel of the GS 4 is
much thinner.
I think it is just the speaker area and completely flat front (the one S and X had slightly curved bezels/edges) that makes the bezel appear stupidly big i.e.

but it gives you a rough idea
I would imagine that the durability is mostly due to the single piece of aluminium with zero gaps throughout (except for the speaker cover area) as well. Probably some good shock absorption stuff put inside as well.
And of course, the speaker areas are pretty large and you have more chance of the phone landing on the bottom or/and top end/corners so as you said more or less, those would be mainly taking the "impact/shock"
EDIT:
Plus when you look at the tear down tests etc., this phone was not made to be taken apart, at least not easily!
