*** The Official iOS and iPadOS 26 Thread ***

Apple reporters say the upcoming new AI Siri will use google's Gemini. Apple's reportedly dumping it's current Apple Intelligence model and will instead use Google's Gemini AI

What's going on over there that they can't develop their own LLM? Surely they've got the resources?

Apple have done this type of stuff in the past though haven’t they?

So they were using Intel CPU’s until they were ready to go it alone with their own.

The same with Maps. Didn’t they use Google Maps until they were ready with their own?

iOS 26.1 is out

If like me your battery life has been rubbish since upgrading to 26, I suggest you try 26.1 as several people have said it significantly improves battery life especially 17 and 17 pro owners

The update is 14Gb though because Apple is bundling AI model changes in the update. I guess they can't update AI's models without rebuilding them

Early days but there appears to be an improvement on my 13 Pro Max.

That was the one noticeable thing I observed when upgrading to iOS 26 was that the battery was getting hammered hard and by lunchtime and the evening, remaining g battery was significantly lower.

Yeah, reading up a bit more, it seems they’ll use Gemini until they get their own model sufficiently advanced.

Anyone else finding that the keyboard doesn't feel as accurate as it used to be, both in typing and swiping ? I've had iphones for years, but I've never felt as much as I do now, that it either auto-corrects to the wrong thing when I know I typed it correctly, or that swipe word selection is wildly out.

Yup - thats exactly the sort of mis-types I'm feeling. It feels like it is overthinking / predicting what I want to type and then getting confused or getting it wrong.
